I'm actually beginning to like this movie, if only for the conversation it's sparking.

Ditto. This is some of the most interesting discussion this thread has had in a really long time.

what happened in 1998 when people said Thin Red Line sucked? Was that a conditioned audience also?

look people, don't fall into the Beebz trap. you can like em all you want, but don't start defending things that are simply indefensible. Malick makes boring movies. Pretty boring movies, but boring nonetheless.

Thin Red Line imdb: 7.6 stars
Thin Red Line rotten tomatoes audience rating: 75%

"what happened in 1998 when people said Thin Red Line sucked?"

Nothing, cause they didnt say that.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

For me what it all boils down to is that TOL aimlessly wandered along for the entire film and aside from the cinematography it never once grabbed my attention. I honestly would have rather sat on my back deck and watched the wind blow the trees and the grass for 2 1/2 hours than watch this movie.

I guess my idea of sucks and your idea are different. a rating of 75 isn't good to me, and when critics like it more than audiences (as with every Malick film), that tells me that Malick is the PBR skinny jeans glasses wearing folk of the film making world.

Movies #190-250 on the IMDB top 250 list are all rated at 8.0 stars - so Thin Red Line is only .4 stars away from being in the top 250. Im not saying that list IS the top 250 movies of all time, but audiences think very highly of them.

So yea, I guess our ideas of a movie sucking are very very different.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Malick just seems like he'd prefer to show a rack to focus from a ladybug to a leaf glazed with dew than anything else. There were moments in Badlands, which actually had a really simple story, where the shot would just cut away to a wide shot of a landscape for like 10 seconds. He turned a house on fire into a five minute scene.

Why compare Malick to indie music? Why not classical music? Or poetry?

I hate the Top 250. Inception's in the top 10. I guarantee TDKR will be #1 for a solid ten weeks when it comes out.

This. Didn't Malick get a Best Director nomination?

And you think Shoot Em Up and Hitman are two of the best 50 movies this century. So....yeah.

I dont think Malick is brilliant and I don't think he sucks.

Yea, this list is not 100% accurate by any means and it has its flaws for sure. But it gives a pretty good idea of what audiences think, which is what we were kind of talking about with Thin Red Line

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I'm actually looking forward to TDKR... unlike TDK, where the fanboys totally ruined that relase for me.

I know it's only January, but there doesn't seem to be nearly the hype-machine for this release as there was for the last.

Why let fanboys ruin a movie for you? that seems kind of silly to me.

So wait, now there's no difference between a movie and a mini-series? Who said that? I bet it was Beebz.

There are minor, arbitrary differences, most prominently in the way its presented. You could chop a movie into four one-hour episodes to make a miniseries, or fuse four hours of a miniseries together to create an opus without doing anything but showing them consecutively.

Don't argue just to argue.

How about you avoid going to fanboy websites or don't listen to people who are consistently talking about it? doesn't seem that hard to me. I knew literally nothing about it because i didn't want to get anything ruined for me.

That they do. I bring some of that on myself, no question. But you're not wrong.

An hour ago, I said USC earned a spot in the Pac 12 title game and two people decided to tell me that I was wrong. Oh well, I like it here anyway.
