Somebody call the Whaaambulance for Samari Rolle

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3141124

This story doesn't make any sense to me. Just sounds like a player who's mad about losing to a better team. So looking for some pity or to cause some damage to this referee, he'll play the race card on him.
Except here's the thing. They're both black.
The other thing is, Rolle accuses the ref of not knowing what its like to play in the NFL. Too bad as it says in the article, the referee is in fact, a former player.
Idiot.

Yeah, Rolle is way out of line on this one I'm afraid. He needs to shut up and worry about next week.

I think Roger Goodell is going to take one look at this complaint and go "Yeeeeeeah, Shut up and play, Samari!"

Doesn't matter if the ref is black. Calling a 31 year old man "boy" is still a slap in the face. It was out of line.

God am I sick of the Race Card.

When you're talking about an older guy saying something to a younger guy, he is a "boy" compared to him. It's the older man's equivalent of calling someone "Buddy", "Chief", "Man".

The ref was out of line. He's supposed to maintain order on the field. Blatantly disrespecting a player is not the way to do that, especially on a team full of hoods like the Ravens. It's no different than the Milton Bradley situation this season in baseball ( I think they mentioned that on NFL Live today ). Full season suspension for the ref is needed...

i agree. i don't care what rolle was doing, the ref has no business instigating the player. you mention bradley and i'll bring up the joey crawford/tim duncan deal. the ref overstepped his boundaries.

i read on another board (foxsports, or somewhere) that "boy" is considered a derogatory term to some african-americans. i don't know why or how, nor have i looked into it. just telling you what i heard.

edit: here you go: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=boy

number 3. don't know how good of a source urbandictionary.com is, but you get the picture.

Which is total and utter BULLSHIT.

Its shit like this that set back the race issue. Its ridiculous, unwarranted, and a waste of time.

Please. Rolle is acting exactly like that right now....a little boy. Making a mountain out of an ant hill. of all that occurs in this day and age, being called BOY should be the least of someones problem. Especially someone getting paid millions to play a fucking game.

It is very different...as in the situations and the instigator was different in each case. I get sick and tired of these "professionals" raising the red flag for every little thing out there.....its immature and unprofessional. If you think youre a man, then act like one. Dont let someone get under your skin for calling you a "boy". Its pathetic.

How have you made it through life and just learning this on a message board.

If anyone thinks I'm crazy for saying "thank God the ref was white", just tack a "boy" on to the end of your sentence the next time you're talking to a black guy.

The thing is...it isn't the "blacks" that are making this a big thing. Not once did either of the two involved in this situation mention anything about race. I believe it is the other way around.

Edit: if there is no reason to dwell on racial slang and how it is perceived by a community, then why do it?

If the ref did this he is out of line.

Whether you know it or not it is insulting to call a black guy "boy". Try it if you don't believe me. And it doesn't matter if the ref is black. Blacks can be racist against their own and it probably comes off as even more condescending coming from another black guy.

Re: Somebody call the Whaaambulance for Samari Rolle

Its not just the "boy" issue by itself, it is that along with some shady calls that make it appear to the Ravens/Rolle that something was up, they were getting the short end of the stick or whatever. If the "boy" thing was the only issue of the game then we wouldn't be hearing about it...

Re: Somebody call the Whaaambulance for Samari Rolle

I can guarantee that none of this situation got started because of any racial tension. 100%. It all has to do with frustration about calls and being called something that made Rolle feel like a child. That is it. That is all it is. There is nothing else behind this. Stop making crakcs at Blacks because you feel like you already need to start defending yourself incase race comes up.

Because if you call a white guy "boy" he doesn't care, it just rolls off his back.
If you call a black guy "boy" then he thinks youre a racist and you're taking him back all the way to the slave days.
That's why.

Re: Somebody call the Whaaambulance for Samari Rolle

The Ravens players were disrespecting the ref first, trying to show him up on national television. Telling a ref "youve never played football before"....what does that accomplish? In this case, the older man called him boy, because compared to him, he is a boy. He was disrespected by a young hotshot player, and McKinley put him in his place.

Many people start off confrontations with "listen son", or "listen here boy". Hes blowing it out of proportion, and its petty. What is this world coming to when you have to complain about someone calling you boy? Its pathetic. Peoples families are getting murdered while xmas shopping, and you have the audacity to complain about someone calling you a name.

you're right. i'm not defending rolle. I'm just saying in no way was his reaction to the ref fueld by what he thought were racist remarks.

The Ravens are a classless football team, so I will be inclined to side against them in nearly any situation anyway.

I don't think this situation is race based, I was just saying thank God the ref was also black. Had he been white I don't think I would've even learned about the Miggy/D-Train trade from ESPN until a week after opening day.
