Could it be a "concept" album?

There are lots of factors that lead to this possible conclusion:

- Tim just described the album as "expansive" and likened it to Sgt Pepper
- Cavallo has produced several concept albums, including American Idiot and The Black Parade
- "All new music" that could conceivably have a unifying theme (Roi, death, etc)
- Talk of "reinventing" the band and going back to BTCS-style music (the closest DMB has come to a concept album in the past)
- Dave grew an impressive moustache, clearly embracing his inner Sgt Pepper

I'm a sucker for concept albums (Thick as a Brick and Dark Side of the Moon come to mind), so maybe this is just wishful thinking, but I really feel like DMB is at a point in their career where this would be a logical step. Thoughts?

Re: Could it be a "concept" album?

Here's the thing, though. People get concept album and rock operas mixed up all the time. American Idiot and The Black Parade are rock operas all the way. Now, rock operas are concept albums, yes. But concept albums aren't always rock operas. BTCS is closer to a concept album than a lot of people think. I think the album will have a very real and natural flow to it, and feel like a cohesive unit. And if that's the case, than yes, it could be called a concept album.

Re: Could it be a "concept" album?

True, there are varying definitions of concept album. Of course, rock operas are one form of concept album. It's almost like the whole jam band question (let's not get into that here). But the fact remains, I could see the band embracing their creativity a lot more for this album and writing around a cohesive, unifying theme as opposed to just a collection of songs.

Re: Could it be a "concept" album?

A rock opera is a concept album that actually tells a running story, or at least attempts to. Think "Tommy", "Quadropehia", "American Idiot".

A concept album is an album that revolved around a central theme or idea, but the songs themselves don't necessarily tell a cohesive story. Think "Sgt. Pepper", "Dark Side of The Moon".

So I certainly can't see them doing a rock opera, but a concept album is a definite possibility. BTCS was pretty close in itself.

I think there's a better-than-average chance it will be, actually. At the very least, I have a pretty good feeling it will be a unified album, one pervading theme carried throughout. Cavallo is all about making epic recordings.

Could it be? Yes.

Will it be? I doubt it.

Dave has stressed before that they have never (including BTCS) made a concept album. Having said that (lol), maybe now is the time they tackle making one.

If you want to talk rock opera you have to mention THE WALL

I think the album is going to have a great flow to it, but its not going to be a concept. I really doubt it.

Re: Could it be a "concept" album?

With Roi opening the album, It would be really hard to imagine Roi not closing the album. I mean, damn, this is Roi's album!

Speaking of The Wall. I'm going to throw this out there like meat between two dogs. You guys can speak what you want. But.....2 Disc Concept Album??? I was thinking of The Wall and The White Album analogy. Also ironic about Sgt Pepper, it took the Beatles 8 albums to make the best. Anyways, jab about that...

I agree. Replace Stay with Help Myself and I think it would be a concept album

I highly doubt this, but you are also using the term pretty loosely. This is really not Dave's style, it's more the fans wanting to make it so.

Right, and Rapunzel fits right in there nicely as a concept.
