I agree completely. I almost don't want to listen to it too much because I don't want it to lose that emotional edge that it has for me. Anyone who has lost someone close to them should be able to relate to this song. It reaches into my heart and takes hold of my emotions and just brings me to tears. I find this song absolutely beautiful.

Baby Blue and FTWII are my least favourite tracks on the album. I really like this album a lot, so that's not saying much, but Baby Blue is nowhere near a stand out song like LITHOG is.

I don't like the song, but I love the contrast between the end of Time Bomb and the opening of Baby Blue. It's like the sound of oblivion, and out of that the Baby Blue riff peeks from the rubble.

Re: I can pretty comfortably say that Baby Blue is Big 3 good

Definitely agree on this one. I actually prefer the April Sessions version for three reasons.

1. More raw stripped down sound, more personal.
2. Will more than likely be played solo in concert (no strings), HOPEFULLY taking over Sister sometime soon
3. It's a minute longer on the April sessions.

But yes, overall this and LITHOG are my favorites from the album

I go back and forth on the need for the orchestra; I don't know which I prefer as of yet; the song completely unadorned with no orchestral backing, or with the strings. However, I think it is a good thing they cut that minute out of the final version. It's such a directly emotional punch to the gut, and the April Sessions version came close to being boring. The cut minute really lets the song make a more visceral impact, to me anyway.

Also, I had an idea that it'd be a cool tribute if and when DMB ever performs this song, that it solely be performed by Dave, Boyd, Stefan and Carter. A little hokey, maybe, but it'd be a nice way of paying respects to Roi.

In his defense that's a damn good album. So is crash, but it's not the holy grail.

Though I wouldn't say it destroys it by any means.

Lying in the Hands of God
Squirm
Time Bomb
Shake Me Like a Monkey

and a handful of others are much better than this song, and equally of "Big 3" quality.

I think the orchestra is unnecessary. Boyd providing Dave with a single violin accompaniment would have made it much more emotional. I know it's a "sad" song, I don't need an orchestra to nail that home.

EDIT: And if Boyd did the accompaniment, it would have been his chance to shine on the album

I love both songs. I agree with you about sister, but I love sister because my father and my aunt have the same kind of relationship.

Re: I can pretty comfortably say that Baby Blue is Big 3 good

i cant stop listening to this song; i think its absolutely beautiful and can really encompass many perspectives -- yeah, dave wrote it about roi but if youve lost anyone you love (death or otherwise) its a beautiful tribute. not to mention, the music side is mesmorizing. this, and little red bird, are top 5 of the new songs for me -- but i honestly couldnt rank them all cuz theres not one song on this record (& bonus disk) that i dont love.

here's the baby blue & little red bird as E1 songs all summer

Well, the orchestra is definetely doing things and creating emotions that Boyd could not do on that song. I feel like we're just reading into needing to find a place for Boyd on the album. I think we should just take the song as is and judge it on its own merits, not whether we think it's "right" for boyd to be playing on it.

Just to clear up: I didn't mean put Boyd in there just for the sake of putting Boyd in there. I just think that he would have given it more impact by himself.

I do agree. I wonder why they went with so much orchestra??

I mean, I guess, but it's hard to imagine. It would really change how the song hits a person.

BB gets better everytime I hear it. When I first heard it, it wasn't standing out to me, probably because I couldn't get Sister out of my head. Now, this along with LITHOG are quickly becoming my favorites on the album.

Re: I can pretty comfortably say that Baby Blue is Big 3 good

I really honestly think that Grux-->SMLAM, LITHOG, Spaceman,Squirm, Time Bomb, and MBB are all on the same level as the big 3 records...the other songs Funny, Dive In, Apie, and Y&Me are all quality songs, but lacking something to put them on that level.

I'm not quite sure what would clarify as the worst song on the record right now, but this is a beautiful song.

I'll take FTWII, just because I like Seven.
