Re: Pearl Jam live blows live DMB away

While I've seen shows for both, I will say that I enjoy DMB more. However, the crowd at PJ was probably a million times better.

As i was thinking about it more, this is what stood out.. the music on stage may be better performed by DMB, but the overall experience would go to Pearl jam.. the crowd seems to be consistently better and more respectful, and there for the show, not just to party and get wasted.. and Eddie is a better front man, where you feel a connection with him and leave feeling you were a part of something, rather than leaving feeling you just saw something. I think this is what really stands out to me.

When I've gone, it's almost literally been all actual fans and a much more mature crowd. There are almost 0 high school kids getting shitfaced not watching the show; it's fantastic.

And I agree I think Eddie is a better front man. He just fucking puts himself out there. PJ is probably in my top 5 bands easily.

I'll 100% agree with the crowd thing. It's a pretty close call between a PJ show and a DMB show actually. One of the top 3 best concerts I've ever seen was PJ about 6 years ago.

I hear you man. They put on great shows. I love listening to Eddie talk at shows though. Just his voice and how he speaks just captivates me.

Unfortunately neither DMB nor Pearl Jam captured the spot for my top show, but hey that's alright

Honestly, the crowd at just about every major act out there is better then the DMB crowd.

I really hate to say this, but I am going to anyway...

Frat guys aside, the HARDCORE DMB crowd is full of dorks...

How many people at DMB shows have you met that have no clue about any other band then DMB? I have never seen anything like it... They can tell you the last time "people people" was played live in the month of October, but if you asked them who wrote AATW, the answer is probably going to be either Dave or Hendrix.

They predict the set list OUTLOUD with 90% accuracy, debating it with their friends based on statistical probability - and ruin the surprise factor for everyone else around them.

They get pissed off when WAYG is played, and to show everyone how hardcore they are, they either sit down, or announce the fact that they are going to go take a piss because WAYG sux.

They wear DMB tour shirts to the show and blare nothing but DMB out of their cars, and when you look at their IPODs in the hopes of changing it up, 95% of music is DMB and they have at least 10 live versions of Two Step alone.

The hot chicks that are there know nothing about the music, and the ones that know everything, are never hot.

I am not saying that these people don't exist in every fan base, but in the DMB fanbase, there are SO many of them... If DMB were a movie, their shows would be the equivalent of attending STAR WARS convention.

I have been a fan for over 10 years, but every time I see Pearl Jam, or Phish, or MMJ - I always think about how much BETTER the crowd is... Damn, I even saw KOL this fall and their crowd was better then DMB's crowd.

I'm at least 96% accurate now with the lack of creativity of the band since 2003.

If you have followed the sets since the beginning of DMB, it really hasn't changed... Look at 1998, DMB's so called, BEST YEAR!!! They pretty much played the same set with small variations night, after night, after night.

The point is: I know that, you know that, and everyone here knows that... That is dorky enough... But to announce the songs OUTLOUD at shows, before they are played and debate their probability with your friends, is annoying to all of the none dorks around you.. All I am saying is, at just about EVERY DMB show I have been too, I hear people doing this... This doesn't happen as much at other concerts I have seen.

The level of douchebaggery at DMB concerts is second to none, even I can agree with that.

I really want to see PJ, hopefully I'm able to catch them next time they're on tour. The same goes with Phish, never seen them before and hoping to get tickets to one of the NYE shows in Miami!

while i cant comment about this whole pearl jam v. dmb live debate since i just got into pearl jam (only have 2 albums), i am going to comment on this lol.

i find this just as annoying as the drunks at shows. i really only enjoy being around the people who are there for the music and to have a good time. if you're there just to get shitfaced, stay away from me. if you're there to brag about your extreme knowledge about the band and get pissed at another round of cornbread, stay away from me. its a concert, have a good time. for this reason, i am staying away from hartford, or the lawn at least. you find BOTH of these sorts of people and its highly obnoxious. i still enjoy myself, but its a little more difficult.

Granted I have only seen PJ once but I left that show wanting more. It could have been the awful marriage proposal during the encore that made me want to punch Eddie in the face for stopping the show for it. Or the three guys in the row in front of me that were dry humping the railing. Or the fact that Eddie drank a whole bottle of wine on stage and was so wasted he couldn't walk straight.

such an irrelevant comment. but seriously, pearl jam mixes it up every show, dave matthews band, every show is pretty much the same, the only defense you have against that statement is that they are your favorite band and you will back them up no matter what. it's a fact that pearl jam treats their fans better when it comes to the stage, there is no argument

Re: Pearl Jam live blows live DMB away

two totally diffrent bands. dmb is lets dance sing our troubles away and have a good time.. I love dmb seen them more than pj, however Pearl Jam is one of the best pure rock and roll bands ever, and put on a rock show night in and night out. Eddie vedder touches your soul when he sings...at this point in my life i would rather see pj than dmb.. 5 or 6 years ago wouldve said dmb... i wouldn't say they blow dmb out of the water, it depends on what your looking for...

It sounds like you caught them around 2003.. which wasn't the best time to see the band.. i have seen them in 2000, 2003, and now 2009.. and this is the time to see Pearl Jam... I'm not sure they have ever been this good, ever.

Someone made the comment that it was an album tour, and it is, but you can't tell... the new songs are already treated like old favorites and they only play a handful each night... there aren't songs that come up and i think "well, i guess this would be the time to take a piss"...

As for the wine bottle.. that sounds like he was just being selfish at that show.. he usually passes the bottle and the first few rows (who, by the way, are all the ten club members)...get a swig :-)

Anyway, this thread has gone on way too long...

Oh of course best band ever

They're in my top 5 (of course, or else I wouldn't be on this site), but if you had to do a global poll on what bands are better, DMB would get raped, no questions asked. All age groups, all walks of life. Even the bullshit radio bands wouldn't have a chance.

I like this post. When Im with my buddy who I usually go to shows with, I'll lean over if I can see Daves hand and say, "Granny?". or after Bartender opener n2 in Cville... "Pig would be awesome here", etc.

But that dorkyness we share stays between us. I fucking hate people that are yelling, "Shotgun!", "#27", "look at me Im a big fan who knows unreleased songs!"
