Picked up Seasons 2 and 3 today. Not sure when I'm going to be able to watch them, as I was planning on rewatching Sons of Anarchy Seasons 1-4 before Season 5 starts in September.
S4 was definitely my favorite. Into the final season now. What a roller coaster ride it has been
Sad when Bodie was shot And it sucks that Namond was the only Tilghman Middle kid who was "saved" from the corner. But that's how it is - for every one that makes it through or gets saved, many more fall. Just so crazy.
And WTF...McNulty is back on the wagon and now tampering with crime scenes? Damn this can't end well for him

Just rewatched the episode where String tells Avon about D. Really powerful, well-acted scene. I love how they depict them drifting apart in their frames of mind as soon as he gets out of jail
Well, that was quite the ride. I adore Mad Men, but The Wire is the greatest thing I have ever seen.
***Possible SPOILERS below; nothing big at all, just a little warning. Will Spoiler big things***
Season Rankings:
4 > 1 > 3 > 2 > 5
Favorite Main Characters:
1. Omar
2. The Bunk
3. Stringer
4. Bubbles
5. McNulty
Favorite Minor Characters:
1. Bodie (yeah on the fence of major/minor)
2. Cutty
3. Ziggy
Least Favorite Characters:
1. Levy (slimiest bitch in the show)
2. Clay Davis (shiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeet! )
3. Stan Valchek
4. Kenard
5. Templeton
"Way Down In The Hole":
Tom Waits (S2) > the Blind Boys Of Alabama (S1) > Steve Earle (S5) > Domaje (S4) > The Neville Brothers (S3)
Favorite Scene:
1. Stringer & Avon on the roof...so powerful
2. Bodie explaining chess to Poot and Wallace in the low rises
3. Omar and Brother Mouzone meeting in the alley, both with guns drawn
4. McNulty's "wake" at Kavanaugh's in the series finale (almost shed a tear!)
5. McNulty drunkenly smashing up his car

The best "codes" to live by:
1. Freamon's. Good PO-lice, but had good senses to him within cases (well maybe not at the end)
2. Daniels'. Protects his guys for the most part, recognizes good PO-lice, and has the sense to get out the game when he gets to the top and realizes nothing fucking changes
3. Colvin's. Realized that something drastic needed to be done in order to really change things. It sure as hell wasn't perfect, but he had the guts to do it. Between Hamsterdam and his work in schools, I think he acquired the broadest view of the interconnected problems of anyone in the series.
Biggest Winners:
1. Bubbles. His redemption story was the best arc that spanned the full series.
2. Cutty. Loved his story; really about finding himself like Bubs' story.
3. Damon. He got out, but so many around him didn't. He was very lucky.
4. Poot. One of the few who lived to tell about it from S1 through S5.
5. Daniels. Did what he could; tried to put good police work in front of everything else whenever possible, and when it was unbearable, he got out. Did the best he could given the circumstances and restrictions of the job.
Biggest Losers (as in casualties of the fucked up systems)
1. D'Angelo's son. Just really sad what that kid is gonna have to deal with as he grows.
2. D'Angelo's mom/Avon's sister. Feel bad for her to an extent, but she must have a LOT of guilt on her.
3. Duquan and Randy. Nowhere to go, no way out, even though they both wanted to do the right things.
The other day in a meeting with my boss, I totally threw out the phrase "chain of command," only because I've been doing my rewatch of The Wire
Phrases incorporated into my vernacular since watching The Wire:
- Re-up (in varying circumstances)
- Calling friends "fuck nuts" (thanks Herc & Carv!)
- Going out "for a taste" (I love the Bunk)
Three episodes into Season 2 now. I liked the Season 1 theme. Should've kept that.
I felt the same, but stick with it, it gets a lot better
And if you haven't noticed, they add the Union aspect to the cast and environment of Season 1. Those stories from S1 continue, so it's not like a completely different show.

When I said theme, I should've said theme music. heh.
But I didn't really care for the first two episodes. S2-Ep3 really picked up though. Maybe one of my favorites of the entire series thus far.

Gotcha
The version of "Way Down In The Hole" for S2 is the original, by Tom Waits.
I felt pretty "meh" for every version of the song as the seasons progressed, through the first 3-5 episodes of each season - then I ended up falling in love with each version such a great song, especially for the series
He's alright. Probably not one of my favorite characters. I do like Major Valchek, though.
One thing that's been on my mind. A lot of people always talked about how great this show was. While one doesn't really affect the other... I've watched 17 episodes of the series and have not recognized one person from another television show or movie. Now, I'll be the first to admit that I don't watch a whole lot of television or a lot of movies, but I just found it weird that the show is filled with a bunch of no-name actors/actresses. I didn't know that going into it.

There were only a handful of people I immediately/quickly recognized from other things:
McNulty as the traitor dude in 300.
Rhonda (Ronnie) as the gravedigger killer from Bones.
Can't forget Avon = Julius from Remember the Titans I was just watching that on TV last night and was thinking Barksdale!
D'Angelo as the kicker/Bobby's friend on The Waterboy
I think that's the most em, so overall you're right. After watching The Wire though, I started watching other HBO/David Simon shows and then you start to really recognize people. I had read how a lot of the Wire's cast came from "Oz" but I didn't really watch that too much.
Ziggy is a main character in Generation Kill. Bunk and Lester (and Prez a little) of course in Treme. Omar in Boardwalk Empire. Herc stars in Breakout Kings which my fiance and I follow. And Carcetti in Game of Thrones.
edit: and let's not forget Brodie in that FedEx commercial and, if I'm not mistaken, Carver in a Target commercial

Which season's version of "Way Down in the Hole" did you guys like best? Personally, my favorite is Season 1's, by the Blind Boys of Alabama. Four is by far the worst, imo.
Tom Waits (S2) > the Blind Boys Of Alabama (S1) > Steve Earle (S5) > Domaje (S4) > The Neville Brothers (S3)
