I'm glad someone mentioned this song. Kathy's Song is brilliant. The best lyrics about a long-distance relationship ever written.

Their Old Friends boxset is one of my favorite collections of music.

Came back to post just this.

"And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you."

is fucking hard-hitting.

Kathy was a girl Paul Simon was dating when he lived in England in the early 60s.

Paul Simon is simply a genius.

Re: Simon and Garfunkel Appreciation

I was able to see their first concert together (since the central park show and grammy appearance) in Scranton, back in like 2003 or so.

I cannot ever explain the electricity that was in that room, for that concert. It was just breathtaking. One of the best shows I have ever seen.

Re: Simon and Garfunkel Appreciation

For Paul Simon solo stuff, I'd recommend Graceland, Rhythm of the Saints, and You're the One. His more recent work is very interesting and in some ways, reminds me of DMB (especially parts of rhythm of the saints)

Hearts and Bones is great too. The Late Great Johnny Ace is a top 5 Simon song for me. It's like 3 songs in one, and the lyrics are amazing.

anyone ever seen the video of simon performing that at the central park concert (they left it off the CD but its on the DVD) when a crazed fan jumps up on stage and screams "i have to tell you something!!!!" Simon is clearly rattled but finishes the song like the pro he is

Yes, I've seen that video. It's even more scary considering that was right after Lennon, Reagan, and the Pope had been shot.

Re: Simon and Garfunkel Appreciation

you can see in paul's face how scared he was when the guy got on stage. that song at that time was a hard pill for a lot of people to swallow.

He did a good job going right back in to the song though... he is a true artist.

God, I love Simon & Garfunkel. What do you guys think about "Blessed"? I feel like I don't really talk about it much when talking S&G with people, but it's one of my go to S&G tunes

I love it. Paul Simon is one of the greatest American artists of all time. I love pretty much every thing he's ever done.

That's an interesting one to think of. One of the much lesser known tunes on Sounds of Silence, usually overshadowed by the hits like the title track, I Am A Rock, etc., but I do know it. Some of the lyrics about the meth drinkers, pot sellers, and illusion dwellers seem a little forced now, but I suppose it was a product of the times.

Anyhow, I'm a huge S&G fan, thanks to my parents' vinyl collection that I listened to as a kid, and I've stuck with everything Paul's done throughout his career (new album dropping early next year, I've heard). It was a thrill to see them on the Old Friends reunion tour in '03. Never thought I'd live to see either of them in person, but the morning of the show came, and it still wasn't sold out, so I bought a ticket and was in heaven by that evening. In keeping with Blessed, a nice rarity that turned up that night was Leaves That Are Green, another little-known tune off of SOS.

My favorites of theirs are Kathy's Song (kudos to everyone else in this thread who gave it a thumb's up), The Only Living Boy In New York, Hazy Shade Of Winter, Homeward Bound, and pretty much all of their album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme.

What's incredibly creepy about it is that the song is, in part, about the death of John Lennon.

Hearts and Bones
is a vastly underrated album. Simon put it out after finishing his 1982-1983 post-Central Park reunion tour with Garfunkel, had his falling out with Garfunkel, summarily erased Garfunkel's vocals from the album, and released it with no promotion, so it crashed and burned. There are actually some bootlegs of the 1983 leg of the tour that feature songs that wound up on Hearts & Bones that give you an idea of how it might have sounded as an S&G album. They work OK, but it's clearly a Paul solo record and works much better that way.

Man, Simon & Garfunkel are incredible together. The only problem is I become a little depressed if I listen too much. That's just my personality though! It doesn't get any better though. I'd have done anything to be a part of their Central Park concert.

I agree. It is an intensely personal album. In particular, several songs give insight into Paul's relationship with Carrie Fisher. The song Train in the Distance, which might be the best on the album, is about Simon's first marriage. And, of course, there's The Late Great Johnny Ace, about John Lennon.
