Astros moving to AL West in 2013

Phillies beat writer Matt Gelb on Twitter. He writes for the Philadelphia Inquirer

Quote:
Astros moving to AL West. Story no one is talking about: There will likely be 30 interleague games per season beginning in 2013.

Good riddance. No idea why they were in the NL Central to begin with. This was the most obvious divisional move in professional sports.

Honestly that was my first thought as well, I mean figuring they were there to begin with. And I didn't quite understand why it was supposed to be "so obvious" why the Astros would be the team to go.

Because Texas is in the center of the country?

and going from roose's link..

Quote:
The two 15-team leagues has been requested by the MLB Players Association to better balance the schedule. Of course, having an odd number of teams in each league means there will be interleague play throughout the entire season,

I'm sorry, am I missing something? How does having an odd # of teams in each league equal there being IL play all year? What does one "naturally" have to do with the other? they could theoretically do the re-alignment, but still have the limited # of IL games during the season, no?

I thought this was more or less a done deal in September....

Either way good to see NL central gets less crowded

Because without interleague play it would mean you'd have one team in each league not playing for 3-4 days at a time.

Without Houston to play 8 times a year maybe the Phills will not even get a chance to choke in the playoffs.

Any PA, Wisconsin, and Ohio are? I would argue, geographically speaking, Texas may be the second closest to the center of the country than any of the teams in the NL Central

Maybe if you added a few weeks to the season. With odd number of teams in a league a team would require and off day every day. Given that most series are 3 games you're looking at getting a series off since you wouldn't have anyone to play.

I don't know about you all, but I love interleague play. Should be cool to see that format expanded.

I'm not sure how if you expand interleague play throughout the year how you don't get rid of or go full blown DH. The more interleague games you have the more it will hurt teams not setup to play in that league. Not fair to either side.

They do not look like an American League team...should be a good rivalry between the Rangers and Astros now

Re: Astros moving to AL West in 2013

It's too bad they won't reverse the DH rules whenever interleague is happening. That is one gimmick that I think would actually be pretty cool, especially if it was only happening in a park once every few weeks, vs. 3 weeks of it in like there is now. Of course then people would complain that the World Series doesn't have the same rules as regular season baseball.

and I read that the Brewers were never an option because Bud is too invested in them and basically hand picked them for the NL.

Re: Astros moving to AL West in 2013

"Kevin W. Yankowsky, a partner at Fulbright & Jaworsky L.L.P. He reviewed the Astros’ lease, which spells out that the home team is a National League franchise, and said the sports authority can simply lock the doors at Minute Maid. “They can sit back and say, ‘We’ve got a valid lease, and this is what it says, and we’re going to enforce it.’ "

That's whats up.

Maybe because they ARE and always have been a NL TEAM, IN THE CENTRAL part of America.

They've got more right to be there than the brewers.

Sooo Reds/Cards/Brews/Pirates/Cubs

No rivalries were broken up, and we didn't lose a major competitor, so really i have no issue with it.
