Pico Vs Island Trees
Code:
Description from CD Universe:
The only thing more asked about than the origins of the name Pico vs. Island Trees is the origins of their sound. "By incorporating elements of jazz, bluegrass, rock, pop, and even hip hop, Pico Vs. Island Trees creates something incredibly out of the ordinary (Daily Tar Heel)." The name actually comes from the court case where Stephen Pico led a group of high school students against the Island Trees school Board protesting the banning of books, such as Huckleberry Finn, from school libraries. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, where Pico indeed won. All this was decided while the band was still in high school. Bryan Carter (Vocals, Percussion) and Jeremy Bullock (Guitar, Vocals) started the band after performing at a school talent show, and later recruited Chris Karlsson (Guitar), B. Howell (Bass), and Brandon Allen(Drums) to create what Pico is today. February 10, 2004 marked the release of their debut album, "Just Wait," on Deep South Records. The Bobby Patterson produced record has received rave reviews everywhere and has garnered vast college and AAA radio play from Maine to Florida. The first single, "Brand New Set of Wings," has "enough sweetness and silliness to charm the pants off any number of fans (Daily Vault)," and the second single, "More Than You Could Know," amply illustrates that "this is music full of innocence and youthful enthusiasm, which makes it irresistible (All About Jazz)." Although often compared to the likes of Ben Folds Five (Robert Sledge played bass on "Six Up"), Guster, and Maroon 5, Pico has been able to "effectively show both light and dark sides, an essential that can often be absent from bands much senior in years (Glide Magazine)." Another writer said the best part of Pico's music is "the eclecticism of the music (DTH)." Throughout the bands travels around the Carolinas in the past year, this has been a huge reason that Pico has become "a veritable club favorite (Independent Weekly)." The future looks bright for Pico, as they recently turned out the biggest crowd of the summer touring season playing the Plaza Stage at ALLTEL Pavilion at the Dave Matthews Band show to an over capacity crowd and continue to surprise even themselves at every new venue. Expect big things this year, as Pico is poised to take their "sophisticated pop" to a town near you.
Recorded at A Red, Red Room Recording Studios, Raleigh, North Carolina between February and August 2003.
