Damn, thats what I get for working where I do I guess.

But, I dunno. I really dig this studio version. And it is very radio friendly. I just wanted something we hadn't heard yet. Something else to look forward to. We just got EVERYTHING plus The Riff in the matter of 24 hrs. damn, months and months of waiting and they drop it all except album cover in one day.

Re: Studio Version of Mercy

If I had to describe the song in DMB terms:

Uplifting like Everyday (song)
Sounds like a mixture of Pig, and a really really non-depressing Digging a Ditch.

Also, Dave's voice hasn't sounded better since at least Busted Stuff, IMO.

Hearing it live made me dig the song. Hearing the studio cut made me love it. Thanks Lillywhite =D

Thank you for coming back Steve Lillywhite. That tune, more so than Gaucho, really highlights what he brings to the band from a production standpoint.

Re: Studio Version of Mercy

Imagine what the other producers wouldve done with this track..... Mark Batson: "Yeah Carter.. I'm gonna need to you to relax on the drums, they sound too busy... try this *1-2-1-2-1-2*" or Rob Cavallo: "That sounds great Boyd but I think those notes are better suited for a loud trumpet, come out the booth" or Glen Ballard: "That was perfect guys, now lets try again.. this time keep it under 3 and a half minutes.. nevermind I'll just cut the end, thats a rap!"

Re: Studio Version of Mercy

I'm kinda "meh" about it right now. Missing the fun and happy, sing about love and friendship Dave; the "let's save dying babies" Dave sounds a little desperate to try to hang on to relevance. I kinda cringe at some of the lyrics; they're cliche. And some of the other Ants are right....it sounds like it's building to something, like filling a balloon, waiting for it to explode, but instead someone lets go of the bottom and the air just leaks out. It's like bad foreplay with no one getting off. The music is great, I can't wait to hear it live, but it's gonna take an effort to really appreciate this song. Can't believe this is the first single. Outside of DMB fans excited to hear a new studio cut, I don't think many others will be sending this song up the charts. Sad panda.

Re: Studio Version of Mercy

I love watching the bipolar emotions of Ants.

But seriously, this song sounds great in the studio. It has the same feel as the big 3, and I expected that out of Lillywhite. I could listen to Carter all day.

glad I'm not the only one. For sure the minority, but good production values and great instrument playing does not make it a good song.

Agreed. It isn't BAD. It's even catchy. "Mercy will we overcome this." Catchy, good. But, yeah. Make the lyrics about something more personal and this gets 5X better right away.

Edit: Thinking of #40, a song that would probably be "meh" if the lyrics weren't so, so sweet ass.

Judging by the studio version, the end sounds like the beginning to two step. That would be a fire segue.

Re: Studio Version of Mercy

I don't think anything in the studio the band has done since Busted Stuff era can match 3:00 to 4:30 on Mercy from a strictly collaborative instrumental sense....that studio outro has big three written all over it.

Re: Studio Version of Mercy

I do hear the layering via lilywhite but seriously guys, it really does not sound much different than all the live versions we have heard thus far. I just heard it on 104.5 filthy & was disappointed. Music is too simplistic for me as well.. Imo

I heard it on the radio today and got goosebumps. After the song the radio DJ said "I wonder how many people have goosebumps and got the chills from that song".

Only 4 mins long? Lilly should have vetoed that short a song length. Radio edits are fine.

Re: Studio Version of Mercy

how do you guys not like this song? There's actual passion and emotion. Something I don't think was very present on the last album save Baby Blue and LITHOG. That's all I need in my music at least. Just feel it

This song is definitely Big 3 worthy. It's way better than Let You Down for instance.

Re: Studio Version of Mercy

A lot of coffin's parts in this remind me of Roi, which I think is awesome. As far as people saying things like "this has big 3 written all over it", I think I'll reserve those type of comments until I hear the song in the context of the album. The music, particularly Carter and Coffin, are pretty incredible here. Also, when Dave sings "lift up your eyes, lift up your heart" you can almost feel the music start to lift you up. Lillywhite is, indeed, the man.

Re: Studio Version of Mercy

Mercy is currently my least favorite of the new songs we've heard so far, but I gotta admit the end of this is pretty great. Just wish it didn't fade out like that. Never been a fan of fade outs on studio recordings
