This is where you and I disagree, every show has the potential to be great, epic, special, whatever you want to call it. The idea that one show becomes less special than the other because they both were special is crazy to me. Rarity means nothing to me anyways, I have seen most of the rarities in my day, and I don't get why something being rare makes it better. If the band busted out a full Blue Water would it be any better than if you heard it in '93 when they played it all the time? That said, I would love to hear it at a show, but I wouldn't blow my wad over it. I just don't understand why other venues need to have sub par sets for you to feel like you had a special show.

Please don't be offended, I am in no way angry at or think less of you as a person. We just have wildly different views on the subject. I hope we can still be friends

This may be my favorite post of all time, and I mean that in all sincerity. I'm considering sigging it. I couldn't agree more. Be careful though. I know exactly what you mean about the rarity factor. I know exactly what you mean about the Big venues getting stronger sets, which is something everyone on these boards knows very well by know. I know exactly what you mean about it meaning more to those in attendance and in the band. And, I even know what you mean when you say that Alpine shouldn't be the only one to get a great set. I'm sure Gorge can top Alpine. But you can't expect every show to be mind-blowingly phenomenal, because then none of them would be as mind-blowingly phenomenal.

Couldn't agree more. And I can say as someone who knows a shit ton of casual dmb fans, I can tell you (and I'm sure many others can too) none of them enjoy the album Stand Up. So unless my case is the only one in the country...no one is clamoring for that album as a casual fan.

No one likes Stand Up, it's not just this board. It never makes up the majority of setlists anymore, the band themselves has admitted to it not being the best they could do as a band. People like BW, it still gets played. It's not rocket science. Literally not one person I know that is a fan of this band enjoys Stand Up outside of YMDT live.

Re: Should shows like Alpine be the norm?

I think it's possible to make a casual/hardcore balanced setlist. Hell, even a show with 5 Big Whiskey can be great, if the other 14 or so songs are more varied. Maybe play Dreaming Tree instead of Seek Up here and there...Play Cry Freedom instead of OOMH, etc. etc... Also, I understand casual fans like You & Me and Funny.... But DMB got so many of their fans by playing songs like Recently and What Would You Say. I think the casual fan, other than enjoying that moment of song recognition with BW material, would enjoy their other hits as well.

i'm sure a poll would prove that at least one person enjoys stand up.

I know so many people who like Stand Up it's not even funny. American Baby, Dreamgirl, Old Dirt Hill, Smooth Rider, Stand Up, Bayou, YMDT, Hunger, are all loved by people I have pretty high respect for.

The standards by which you base respect are incredibly low.

EDIT: before you get your panties in a bunch, I'm obviously kidding with my post

Excellent post, I couldn't have said it any better myself. I don't need crazy rarities to have an excellent show. The band didn't get famous by not playing the now classics.

Re: Should shows like Alpine be the norm?

Finally... Caught up.

I went to deer creek N1 and N2 this year and would wish that weekend experience for everyone. Voting no on this poll seems selfish to me. Although I enjoyed creek N2 and would rate that show highly... there is still a lot of room for improvement. The same goes for Alpine too. Both nights were awesome (Alpine gets the edge) but the sets could be even more "epic".

But waitz... That would make places like Alpine less specialz if they always played awesome shows. Then throw in Halloween and The Last Stop in additional to Alpine's setlist. Take them. I don't give a shit if I'm getting shows from the big venues at places like Riverbend (Which I attended this year).

The band should just play 50 shows at alpine and 3 at the gorge. That would be a hell of a tour.

People need to understand that this is DMB 3.0. You will never have 1.0 (91-00) or 2.0 (2001-2007) ever again. Just enjoy what you have while you still have it.

I think a lot enjoy some of the SU songs live. ABI and Bayou with Robert Randolph. There's a video of ABI at Alpine a few years ago where the crowd was simply going nuts over this song.

I'm not shooting it down because it's in direct opposition to mine. I'm shooting it down because it's asinine.

Alpine was DMB at their current best. If you say that you don't want all shows to be as good as Alpine, you're essentially saying that you don't want to DMB to be at their best every night. That is insane to me.

Virtually every DMB show before 2001 was "mind-blowingly phenomenal" and no one took issue with it. The biggest complaint back then was too many repeats, because every song was great. The sole Winter 1998 show I attended went as follows...

The Last Stop
Satellite
Heartbeat Intro >
Pantala Naga Pampa >
Rapunzel
Don't Drink the Water
Lie in Our Graves
Crush
Stay (Wasting Time)
Say Goodbye
Jimi Thing
Rhyme & Reason
Crash Into Me
Two Step
--------------------
I'll Back You Up
Warehouse

...and it was considered decidedly average (or even slightly below) for that tour. Think about that for a second.

Every show being great would simply mean the average show would increase in quality, thus raising the bar for every show across the board and making everyone happy.
