Do people realize what a scam anti-virus software is?

Options:

1.) Yes, I don't waste money, I just have AVG free (insert name), never do scans, never do anything, and never have computer problems.

2.) No, I shell out tons of $$$ because Best Buy Geek Squad Tells me to.

3.) No, I see ads on the side of my screen for Windows Souper Defendor and download them, and run scans to "make my comp faster".

4.) I've been stockpiling Trojans for years.

Had PC, used free anti virus software; ran a scan now and then. Never really had big problems.

Re: Do people realize what a scam anti-virus software is?

Uhh I run a antivirus software that I downloaded (i.e. stole) for free and I never have any problems. Which option should I pick?

Sometimes I pick up Trojans or malware from torrenting and it quarantines and knocks that shit out real quick

If you have a PC just get Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and really good.

As a computer programmer, I resent anyone in this thread telling people to man up and buy a Mac.

Re: Do people realize what a scam anti-virus software is?

Have avg free and the only time I got a virus was at UC when they required Norton or Macafee on your system to connect to the Internet in the dorms. I had Norton and got a virus that Norton didn't ever pick up. Installed AVG Free and it picked up 4 infections and cleared it up in 5 minutes. Never looked back after that.

Re: Do people realize what a scam anti-virus software is?

If you have Norton/McAfee, you're guaranteed to get more viruses than you would if you didn't have anything installed at all. Just spend a little time getting them out of your computer (and be careful, they hide files very deep) and you'll be better off.

This 100%. We even use it at work. In the 15 to 17 years or so that I've been heavily using computers I can only remember one time I ever had to deal with a virus and that was about 14 years ago. I honestly have no idea what people are doing with their computers to get viruses these days. Just don't open stupid emails and don't click on stupid links.

I saw a friend of mine do this one time:

1. Opens email.
2. Notices that there's one of those scam emails that says "look at this picture I found of you!"
3. Clicks link.
4. Signs into Facebook as prompted to view the site.
5. Clicks another link.

Re: Do people realize what a scam anti-virus software is?

AVG kept spamming the fuck out of me trying to get me to upgrade.

I use SuperAntispyware now. Free and no spam. Scans run automatically every day.

Re: Do people realize what a scam anti-virus software is?

I had AVG for a year. Then somehow my free subscription ran out. Dunno how. They wouldn't let me download it again for free so I went to Avast.

Only had Avast for a couple months and it has already run out and wants me to upgrade.

Isn't super anti spyware just a spyware protector and not an antivirus program?

Don't know what to get next.

okay this is just what I was going to ask about. After going myself on AVG for a long time I recently made the switch to Avast on the rec of a friend. Although I've had it for longer than a couple months, no issues as of yet with any upgrading questions.

Download Malwarebytes and Spybot.

I use those two, both free, and never have any issues. I never used anti-virus until I got a really bad virus. It was the one that pretends to be the AVG bullshit. Not sure how I got it since I never download stuff from untrustworthy sources.
