Notes:
The seeds for BARN69 were planted when our friends Andy and Meredith Freed who came to visit us in NYC last summer from Boston and brought us to the Citifield Dave Matthews Band show -- my first since the HUGE Central Park show years ago. While chatting with them I recalled attending and recording this Bonnaroo set and that it came out quite good. The show itself, while enjoyable, wasn't particularly memorable. Highlights include the "Solsbury Hill" Peter Gabriel cover, a killer version of The Band's "Up On Cripple Creek" with Trey on vocals, the acoustic duo segment near the end with Trey & Dave trading off verses on each-other's songs and a few of the songs from the Dave Matthews solo project "Some Devil" (though most of them were nothing to write home about). "Gravedigger" is a pretty good one, "Stay Or Leave" and "So Damn Lucky" also pass muster, but on the whole I find most of the songs on the album (and subsequently this show) to be pretty forgettable. One notable thing for Phish fans about this show is that there are 2 guitarists in the band, and Trey and Tim Reynolds couldn't be more different in their styles or the sound of their guitars, so it's interesting to hear the interplay between the two. Another interesting fact is that Tony Hall, the bassist in this band, has gone on to become one of the *2* bassists in Ivan Neville's awesome Dumpstaphunk. He gets a nice solo to begin the final song of the night.
Regardless, it's a pretty great sounding recording!
Enjoy!
Scott
