Tonight I was fortunate enough to be able to spend some time with Tim Reynolds. He came here to the University of Florida with the Dennis Kucinich campaign. The event started at 7:00 PM but me and a close friend got there around 5:00 PM. This gave us plenty of time to grab a front row seat. At about 5:15, Tim walked out to the stage to talk with the soundboard attendant. It was a bit awkward because the only ones in the building were me, my friend, Tim, and the gentleman in charge of the sound. I certainly did not want to interrupt them so I figured the best thing I could do was stand up and hope he looked my way. Luckily, after about a minute, he looked over at me and I nodded and smiled. He came over and shaking his hand I said, "Tim, I really admire your work and I appreciate your dedication to producing such fresh material." He smiled and said "Thanks a lot, thank you." Then I asked him how long he had been in town and he said "We actually got in last night but we were too tired to really check out the town." I told him he's lucky he was tired because he would have been disappointed. He laughed and he asked if I worked for the venue (The O'Connell Center) and I said "No I came ridiculously early with the hope that I'd get to hang out with you for a bit." He said "Well that's really kind of you, thanks." He then asked me what my name was which I thought was pretty cool. I told him I thought he played a significant role in the making of Dave's solo album and he said "Thanks, we all had a really good time making it." I then told him it would be very well received if he decided to show up at a couple DMB shows this summer and he laughed and said "Nah, I really don't think so." I was really surprised at the nature of his reaction. It was immediate and he seemed like it was a laughable proposition. I didn't want to probe into the matter more so I left it alone. I then asked him if he would consider playing "Stranger in a Strained Land" tonight and he said "I only do one song and I had planned on messing around with some new stuff." I said "I'm sure that will be just as entertaining but that's disappointing that you're only doing one song." He said "Yeah it's just kind of an introduction type thing for Dennis." The soundboard attendant then said something to Tim and Tim nodded to him and turned back to me and said he had to get going. I asked him if he minded if we hung around for soundcheck (we were still the only ones in the building) and he said he didn't mind at all. I then said "I know you have to go but can I get a picture with you?" He said "Of course." My friend snapped a shot (it's attached). Sound check was very interesting as Tim was making all kinds of weird noises into the microphone. He was growling and humming for a while and then he actually sang a couple songs. His voice is actually rather impressive. I'm not sure why he soundchecked the mic because he didn't sing in his performance. Speaking of which, his performance was as per usual mind-blowing. The man is truly a gifted musician and it was an honor and a pleasure to be able to hang out with him for a bit. I won't say anything regarding Mr. Kucinich for the sake of this thread remaining non-political.
