Re: Umphrey's McGee Appreciation Thread.
I was on the phone so didn't feel like writing up anything substantial. So here's my review of last night:
First off, I've seen a 2 hour one set show before, and it's definitely weirder and not what you're used to with UM, but they did a pretty good job with it. In a way you feel like you're only really seeing about 3/4 of a show though which kind of sucks. Having said that, they brought the heat last night and really put out a great, tight show. I went with two newbies who were loving it
No Crying > 40's: Great way to open a show. That intro is sweet and 40s is 40s, which is to say an awesome tune. End solos were on point
Miami Virtue: Love this song, this had a very nice jam but it seemed to be cut a bit short (there was a hard 11 pm curfew at BoA) >
Booth Love: MV dissolved into this and again, a really nice funky jam that didn't quite "get there" due to it not being stretched out too far.
Crucial Taunt: Love the name, and the song is pretty hot too. I think it'll go places
Resolution: Wow, highlight of the night by far. Two monstrous jams with multiple different sections, this was a slam dunk winner
2x2: Can't beat this segue and this tune is beautiful. The middle jam portion was Joel just dominating with some great piano work
Live & Let Die: Ironically the other time I saw this was the one setter in LI last summer. They nail it, great song, crowd loves it
Rocker II: Again, rock solid as always and played very nicely last night with the end jam peaking to great heights
Comma Later: Didn't care for the placement but I'm warming up to this a bit. They had a nice "jam" going at the end that again didn't go as far as I would've liked
Tinkles: Smoking and a great set ender as always.
Puppet: This actually worked really well as an encore. Standard version, but that ending is a rager. Good high note to go out on
So overall, what they played was really solid and well done, I just would've liked to have seen a two setter, or them to have a bit more time with the set they did do. It wasn't a two hour set with encore as advertised. It was 2 hours total including the encore break, so we definitely didn't get as much show as you'd like. But I had a great time and they played very well.
