Dave Likes The Color of Water

Posted by Joe Maliszeski in Band Side Projects at 3:15pm on Monday, Jan 12th, 2004

Dave Matthews has recently purchased the rights to The Color of Water by James McBride (writer: Miracle at St. Anna (2003), The Color of Water (1997); jazz musician), according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Color of Water has sold more than 1.5 million copies in the U.S. along with receiving the 1997 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Literary Excellence and being a American Library Association Notable Book of the Year. The book also spent more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list. While the intentions of Matthews aren't explicitly listed in the article, one would assume that this will be the second film release by ATO Productions, an addition to Dave Matthews' co-owned ATO (According to Our) Records company. The first release being Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony, a documentary film that shows the key role music played in the South African struggle against apartheid from 1948 to 1994. Amandla! recently opened in the UK, and is now available on DVD/VHS in the U.S via the ATO online store. The screenplay for The Color of Water is currently being written by McBride.
