Live 8 (Live Aid) creates DMB 'doubleheader'

Posted by Joe Maliszeski in Tour News at 5:15pm on Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Today Bob Geldof, an organizer of the 1985 Live Aid concert for famine relief in Ethiopia, announced the latest edition, Live 8, to be held on July 2, marking the 20 year anniversary of Live Aid. The free concert gets its 8 from the Group 8 (G8), eight leading industrialized nations that meet together to discuss economic and political issues. The Live 8 concert is intentionally scheduled before the 2005 G8 meeting in an effort to raise political awareness of poverty around the world, in particular Africa. Currently there are 5 concerts scheduled, one in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy (with the possibility of more in the other 3 of the G8, Japan, Canada, and Russia.) The concerts are part of the ONE campaign. Click here to view a PSA from US celebrities about the ONE campaign.

The free US concert will be held at the Museum of Art in Philadelphia, PA. The US concert will include a performance by the Dave Matthews Band along with Bon Jovi, Maroon 5, P Diddy, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Sarah McLachlan, Rob Thomas, 50 Cent, and others (cue the Jay-Z will produce the next album rumors). The July 2nd date is also for the second night at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY, a five and a half hour drive from Philadelphia (though much shorter flight). The last time the full band has pulled off a “doubleheader” (not including radio/t.v. performances) was on May 10th of 1995 with shows at Yoshi’s and the Warfield in California. But the band has never done such a thing in 2 different states.

There are current plans for the concert (or portions of it not necessarily just the US concert) to air on a US television station (though one has not been determined yet). In addition the concert will be broadcast via AOL. Thanks to Kris, who was first of many to pass the info on to us.
