Dave Matthews Band confirms Boyd Tinsley's Break from TouringPosted by Jen Henson in Band Member News at 12:59pm on Saturday, Feb 3rd, 2018
Yesterday evening violinist Boyd Tinsley sent shockwaves through the Dave Matthews Band community when he announced that he would be taking a break from the band and touring. In his tweet, Boyd stated that he needed to take a step back to focus on his family and his health.
This afternoon the band posted from the Dave Matthews Band Facebook page and stated: "Boyd has been a member of the family since the band began and we want him to focus on his health and get better. We support his decision to do this and we’re sending positive thoughts his way."
This statement comes on the heels of a full summer tour and new album announcement. At this point, it is unclear what the band intends to do about Boyd's position. Although there have been countless musical guests and even a flag bearer on stage with the band over the years, there has never been a guest violinist.
But we may not have to wait too long to see what plans might be in the works. Dave Matthews Band is headlining tonight's The Night Before [the Super Bowl] Concert in St. Paul, MN. What was a one-off show now holds the Dave Matthews Band community’s attention as we wait to see if anyone will be added to the show’s lineup. However, with what may have been an unplanned for decision, a lack of fiddle player tonight may not necessarily equate to a missing violinist on the summer tour. If you have a musician in mind that you think may be able to temporarily fill that gap join the discussion on the AntsMarching Forums.
Boyd's tweet stated that he needed to take a break "for a while," which definitely doesn’t sound permanent. We know from recent tweets that Boyd was looking forward to touring with the band. Out of respect for Boyd and his family's privacy, we won’t speculate on health issues. But we here at AntsMarching do offer thanks to Boyd for all of his years with the band and wish him good health and a speedy recovery.
