***Official Jones Beach (Wantagh, NY) 2012***

3 Attachment(s)
June 12-13, 2012.

Wanted to start a new thread, with the official dates.

I have attached some pictures of the venue. For those of you who have never been or plan on making the trip, have a look at the pics so you can get a feel.

View is excellent, acoustics could be better, although I have never really found them that bad.

This is my home venue, so any questions go ahead and ask, someone will have an answer for you. Ill post more information about hotels in the area as we approach.

Important notes: This is an alcohol free venue, with the exception of VIP. This includes the parking lots. It is a state park and they enforce it strongly, especially during concerts. Bring a red cup and you should be fine. Just don't make a scene.

Some lower sections are prone to flooding, I was standing in 10 inches of water with crabs at my feet in 09. Don't wear your nice shoes if rain is a possibility.

Happy Touring!

Thinking that one of these shows might be the only ones I will be able to make. I live in Brooklyn, but have never been out to Jones Beach before. Any idea if its better to drive or take public transit?

So how does one get to Jones Beach via public transportation? Is there a LIRR train that goes out that way?

Well I work in Brooklyn so I know how shitty the traffic is. Public transport doesnt take you directly to the theater. You will have to take a taxi from the train station. I have heard that some train stations have a bus running back and forth. (I cant confirm this). If you drive, once you get past the Brooklyn traffic its really not that bad. Youll probably end up on the Southern State, and then to either the Meadowbrook or Wantagh Prkway. Its def doable, especially if you don't mind sitting in a little traffic.

davisaj 02-15-2012 06:03 AM

Re: ***Official Jones Beach (Wantagh, NY) 2012***

Yeah, i have no problem with the traffic, would rather an easy commute to my front door after the show than dealing with public transit afterwards. Any sense of which night is better at Jones? I know night 2's are typically stronger at SPAC (my old home venue), but not sure about Jones...

This all depends where you are coming from, but I've heard the best way is to take the LIRR to Freeport and then a bus or taxi from there to the venue. You can pick up the LIRR at Penn.

Night 1 in 2009 was the worst show I have ever been to. Haha, hope that helps.

Much better. Crowd was better, set list was better and the weather was great. Spac and Jones Beach are imo, the 2 nicest places to see a concert in NY. And yes, Ill be hitting Spac and then coming back for Jones. Kinda wish they spread them out a little more.

IMO.........N2s are usually better. But if you can only make it to N1....its still a GREAT show!!!
Jones Beach is a nice venue especially if the weather agrees. BUT if it rains....the front sections do flood. Also its a "dry" venue unless you pay the extra fee to get into the VIP section...which only has beer and wine for sale. Since its a state park you are not supposed to tailgate....but in my experience if you keep it hidden and quiet, they pretty much leave you alone.
As far as getting there, I live in the area so I always drive. Parking is pretty decent...they have several parking fields. Getting out after the show isn't all that bad. I think if you want to take public transportation you have to take a bus. Maybe someone else knows more about that.
Anyway hope you get the chance to make it to at least one night at the beach!

It's doable, it's just a 3:30-4 hour trip....without traffic

LOL! Had a great time at this show. I know this isn't saying much but listen to that Shake Me Like a Monkey. Intro and then a stop before the lyrics. Great show considering it was heavy on the Whiskey.

Haha yea, I remember, I also remember seeing some moron say it was a power outage, and not an intro.

You should check out Bethel Woods too, it is definitely among the nicest venues anywhere. Two nights at Jones Beach is awesome - just 15 minutes from home. :)

Re: ***Official Jones Beach (Wantagh, NY) 2012***

i hate, hate, hate, hate jones beach but i will probably wind up going considering its the closet venue to me on this tour. i was hoping they would go for Yankee Stadium or red bull arena or something else because jones beach isnt the best environment to see a show. i try to avoid it just cause the sound can be wacky depending on how the wind is blowing, and theres very little coverage if its raining, and the floor floods sometimes during high tide. the only reason why im considering going is if i can get tickets in the orchestra because if youre in the upper structure, its a long ways away. anyone who went in 09, theres no GA right? its all seating? i know the seats are permanent but they put out folding chairs for the few few rows, wasnt sure if they change that. ugh, just sucks the garden will be out of commission for the renovations

I rarely post on here as you can see, but I am thoroughly confused with this 'GA pit' option here. I have been to Nikon (tommy hillfiger etc) many times. The seats are permanent fixtures all the way up to the stage. Does anyone know if this is numbered seating or something else? Thanks guys.

I just ventured into this thread about to post the same thing. I have no idea. I'm almost positive theres no room for a GA pit.

There isn't... I tried to call Jones Beach but that sends me to livenation and they don't know a thing. Warehouse apparently doesn't open until 11?! haha.. Been a member for 12 years I have never had to call. This is really irking me. And why are the VIP tickets $250 each? That is quite a leap from $75 GA Pit seating. None of this makes sense to me, although I could have tunnel vision and seeing everything in front of me?

as i said, the first 4 or 5 rows in front of the stage are fold up chairs as you can see in the picture i took. im curious to see if they make it into a little vip ga area, though i doubt it.

I went to Jones Beach N2 2009. It was a really great show. Kind of annoying that it's all one price range, so the uppers (where lawn would be) are still just as expensive as great seats. But there are no visibility problems or anything. I will try to make it to these two shows :thumbsup

I agree with this. Its very odd. I don't know how many people they could possibly fit in that small amount of space. All I know is I have been there tons of times, as I said before.

If you have a seat all the way up or very close it is a great venue. You have the stars, beach, etc. The one downside is that it is dry. But just be creative...

I am going to go reserved and hope that my seniority gets me close.

Hmm... only have a 500 limit on the CC. need to figure out which shows to put in for... JB or Spac or a combo of Both. Thinking all JB and N2 SPAC. then getting the GF to do TM/LN for Spac N1 and Bristow...

This will be my first time at this venue. Does not being able to drink cut into the fun at the show? That probably sounds bad but I am curious.

Re: ***Official Jones Beach (Wantagh, NY) 2012***

For the people saying there is no room for a pit, I believe they'll be removing a bunch of seats in order to create one. No idea, but that doesn't seem too far-fetched.

The lot here can be pretty fun. Keep it in a cup and everything will be ok. As with any venue, you can always sneak stuff in....I happen to like shows here, especially if it's a nice day, it's the driving home that bites.

Always great to hang at the beach before and theres a mini golf course thats crappy, but after a few drinks it's all good!

Trying to decide on which day to go for...can't do both on this one.

Jones Beach is always fun.Great venue.Going both nights this time.

I agree N1 '09 wasnt a top show.I was disappointed. The crowd were quiet,it rained, and the band,IMO,just didnt seem into it.They seemed flat to me.Considering the band hadn't played Jones Beach in ages,I thought they would have been more fired up and were going to put on a killer gig.

Wasnt N1 '09 the show were Dave cursed a guy out ?

Yea, someone close to the stage did something that pissed him off. Typical Long Islander.

On a side note, I hope this thread stays busy. In 2009 it was never on the front page.

if you want to drink inside the venue, you can buy a pass to the "beer garden" which is left of stage and standing room. not a bad view if get a decent spot in there.

The state troppers and park police patrol the lots but they have always been good to me as long as you don't do stupid shit. drink out of a solo cup and they won't give you a problem.

The MTA runs shuttle busses from the lots back to the train after the show.

As far as I know, MTA stops service now at around 8 due too budget cuts. I would call MTA, and just get a real answer. Getting a taxi shouldn't be that hard. It won't be too expensive.

Staying in Bethpage... How rough will that drive be Post-show... since it's fairly close i'm not too terribly worried about it... just don't know much about the area (i actually know nothing) pretty excited still!

Bethpage to Jones Beach should be a really easy trip, just about a 15 minute drive - once you get out of the parking lot.

Can you tell me that in 2009 you went to the show and took a shuttle back to the train station after it ended?

Yes. I did for both the Phish shows and DMB.

Just requested my tickets. Does anyone know about parking? Do I need to request the premium parking? Or can I just find a spot, for less than $30, once I get there?

Nah no need to pay for premium parking. Parking is free and its usually not too bad getting out of the lot. I like to park closest to Ocean parkway (furthest from the theater) so i can exit quickly.

Parking has always been free in that parking lot, all you have to do is show them your ticket. If you don't have a ticket , they'll turn you around, or make you pay the $10 state park fee.

To clarify my statement, the venue is located in the same parking lot for Zachs Bay, a beach. When that beach is open, you must pay the state park fee to get in or have an Empire Pass. But, if there's a concert going on & you have a valid ticket, your entrance to park is free. Hope that helps.

My bad.....I dont remember,I just assumed I paid something..I did go early, and we went to the Beach for a bit......Im from Manhattan,so Im used to paying...

I know at the Citi Field gigs in 2010,they jacked the price up a good $10 (maybe more) from what you normally pay at the gate for a Met game....

Hotels:

If your looking for a reputable, decent quality hotel, and you can spare the cash, I would reccommend the Mariott in Uniondale. It is next to Nassau Coliseum.

Long Island Marriott
101 James Doolittle Boulevard
Uniondale, New York 11553 USA
(516) 794-3800
__________________________________________________ ________

In 2009 alot of people didnt want to pay that much, so I posted some other hotels that were near the 2 main access points of the venue, the Meadowbrook and Wantagh Parkways. These are all within 15 minutes of Jones Beach. I pass most of them on a daily basis, they all seem fine.

Coliseum Motor Inn
1650 Hempstead Turnpike
East Meadow, New York 11554
516-794-2100

^^Right near the entrance to Meadowbrook prkwy, quick and easy trip. Hempstead turnpike is also one of the largest roads on Long Island, so if you are looking for things to do aside from the show, this is a good location. Plenty of food, Nassau Coliseum is right there, along with Hofstra, and Eisenhower park.
________________________________________
Holiday Inn
WESTBURY-LONG ISLAND
369 OLD COUNTRY ROAD
CARLE PLACE, NY 11514 UNITED STATES
516-997-5000

^^^This one is also near the entrance of the Meadowbrook, just a little further north. Probably an extra 2 minute drive, but I think it might be a better location. There are 2 malls, one being Roosevelt field, one of the largest in America within 5 minutes of the hotel, along with plenty of Restaurants and still within 5 minutes of Eisenhower park if your an outdoor person.

Here are a few other ones, I don't know much about them, they are still relatively close, maybe theyre cheaper.

Long Island Red Roof Inn
699 Dibblee Drive
Westbury, NY 11590
516-794-2555

Bethpage Motel
4107 Hempstead Turnpike
Bethpage, NY 11714 US

La Quinta Inn and Suites

Rooms from $185 during the show dates. Super easy to get to. Basically a straight shot down on the Meadowbrook. Close to the aforementioned Marriott, Holiday Inn, and Red Roof Inn.

Awesome post, you guys have plenty of options.

Tough as in what , traffic ? Definitely give yourself an hour, but I don't see that much traffic heading West that time of night. Your biggest issue will be waiting in taffic getting out of the lot, there's only 2 exits.

I know what you mean, that's what I hate about that place too. I need my room as well & my seats always wind up being near people who sit down & don't dance around. :eek I try to get my way in VIP usually, you can def move around in there ! :D

I agree with the sound way up at the top, especially if it's windy, the sounds all over the place, I wouldn't base my decision on attending on that though.

It's going to be a teeny tiny pit. Maybe they feel with the will call pit they can control the amount of overcrowding down there. I'm so happy about this show, sooooo close to home :)

Looks like tix will be available for both these shows through citi private pass. I requested pit for night 2 through the warehouse. If I end up confirmed, and am able to pull some good seats in the presale from citi, I could end up with the best seats I've ever had for a show.

:thumbsup Good seats in this venue are a must, as is good weather. N1 in '09 was a real disappointment and I wasn't able to be there for n2. Hoping I have better luck this year (night 2 only)

n1 in 09 was awful because of the rain. i didn't think my seats were going to be too great, but they ended up being some of the best in the venue. there were like 6 rows covered by the upper deck, the only seat seats in the entire venue that are covered, and thats where mine were. we were already wet from having to run through the lot, but we didn't have to stand in it like everybody else did all night.

Ya i know what you mean. I was above that in the top deck. It was fun of course because it was a dmb concert, but it was probably the least fun i've ever had at a show. My tailgate party turned into us sitting in the car drinking while the rain pounded down.

The band clearly wasn't into it that night either. I think it's the only show i've ever been to that I didn't take the time to listen to the tape.

That said, I heard awesome things about night 2 in '09, so lets pray for sunshine.
