Nolan Ryan. I have a really hard time arguing against seven no hitters in the modern era.

People are going to laugh at you. I don't mind the vote at all, but people will laugh at you.

I've always been a fan of Maddux to be quite honest. There are some guys up there (Johnson and Ryan in particular) that dominated because of their power, however Maddux relied on pin point accuracy and pitch selection to be effective. Without pulling up stats and wins etc. I am going to pick Maddux.

I'm laughing at you :lol

Nolan Ryan is the worst pitcher in the hall of fame. Too many walks. Too many losses. By voting Ryan, all you're saying is "I'm a kid and I don't understand baseball but I remember him striking out a bunch of guys before I was born."

Walter Johnson is the correct answer

i grew up in Alvin, TX.

my recently deceased grandfather umpired Nolan's games from Little League at Schroeder Field through high school as an Alvin Yellow Jacket. When he looked like this: http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zo...0b6aa9076c.jpg

my mother coached his daughter Wendy in gymnastics.

to say the least, the Ryan family are long time family friends. I've met Nolan on several occasions at his bank (The Express Bank, Alvin TX).

single season strikeout record.
300 win club
7 no hitters
all time strikeout record that may never be matched...

although he never won a cy young award, his basic stats scream "greatest of all time."

i've got a lot of autographs from him, but my favorite is a personalized signed ball saying "happy birthday" to me from 1991. i'll try to upload a pic this weekend.

my grandpa said that umpiring behind the plate for Nolan's high school games was simply amazing. simple because nearly every batter was a K, and amazing because he was hitting a mid to high 90's fastball as a 16 year old high school student.

i didn't have a clue who Nolan Ryan really was until the 1986 season when the Astros (arguably the greatest Astros team ever) was eliminated just short of the World Series by the NYMets.

i remember running around the Ryan's pool at family parties, too young to really understand the company i was in...

if we're going off career numbers, i strongly believe that Nolan Ryan is the greatest MLB pitcher of all time. and it will be a LONG time before anyone ever touches his numbers.

Re: Poll: Best MLB Starting Pitcher (All Time)

His stats scream "wildly overrated," they don't scream anything near even the stratosphere of greatest of all time.

Re: Poll: Best MLB Starting Pitcher (All Time)

It's pretty much a joke that he's even on the list (although you've made it clear that the entire point of creating the thread in the first place was to talk about him).

"wildly overrated'? when he has the best stats of all time, how is that considered overrated?

i made the poll with 10 legitimate pitchers from the beginnings of baseball to recent retirees. i thought it was a good spread of the history of MLB for people to vote on.

my personal choice shouldn't have any influence over 9 other completely worth while choices.

Pedro Martinez

Re: Poll: Best MLB Starting Pitcher (All Time)

You pointed to two stats he leads in: K and career K. Both of these were because he pitched a ton of innings. Don't get me wrong, there's value in pitching a lot of innings-but you didn't ask who the most durable pitcher of all time was. The season he set the single-season K record ranks 27th all time in K/9. His career rank in K/9 is 5th. No hitters are completely random and are a poor indicator of skill.

Re: Poll: Best MLB Starting Pitcher (All Time)

Hahaha, right, Phil Humber pitched a perfect game, as did Kenny Rogers.

Nolan Ryan pitched for 27 years, which means he had a lot of time to compile stats.

Re: Poll: Best MLB Starting Pitcher (All Time)

I never saw Cy Young or Walter Johnson pitch but I can imagine it was amazing...I do have a problem with this poll though. If pitchers like Clemens, Randy Johnson etc. are included - Pedro should be included. Career ERA under 3 during the time he pitched.... Amazing. He might not have the amount of wins as some others, but he also played on some shitty teams.

YouNeverKnow25 05-04-2012 05:48 AM

Re: Poll: Best MLB Starting Pitcher (All Time)

Again, that's not to discredit durability: very valuable. But I'm looking for some peak out of the "greatest pitcher of all time," and Ryan's peak was completely overshadowed by numerous pitchers.

Re: Poll: Best MLB Starting Pitcher (All Time)

Pedro is top 3 of all time, if not higher. Wins are stupid. If your argument as to why pitcher A is better than pitcher B has anything to do with wins, GTFO.

Nah, I'm just giving you garbage. When it comes to polls like these, I never vote... cuz I didn't see most of them pitch. Pedro was incredible, as was Randy and Roger*.

you're all fucked up.

Wins are stupid? that's the sole and entire point of playing the game.

so Nolan Ryan played 27 seasons... that's a tick in the plus column because he dominated the majority of those 27 seasons, ie, he was fucking effective as fuck.
