I strongly, but respectfully, disagree. He was not the most important element by any means, but still critical to what made those albums sound so great. His interplay with Roi on songs like Rhyme & Reason, #41, DIDO, Bartender is one of the things that hooked me on this band. He has some really nice moments, such as the middle of Typical Situation and the one chorus of Rapunzel. Off the top of my head he's also great and noticeable on JTR and Last Stop. On SU and even BW, he was more window dressing than anything else, popping up for small moments here and there. I want more of that interplay between violin and sax than just Boyd sticking his head up for a short solo on a couple of songs.

i could not agree more

llws captain is amazing work by boyd
listen to boyd follow stefans baseline in the stone..its unreal

but the thing i agree with most is that boyd and roi fed each other and complimented each other so nicely...id love to see what this horn section can do in the studio with out leaving boyd as "just another guy on stage" both of these musical parts should compliment one another moving forward

I'm super pumped that Jeff will have some creative input in this album

The thought of Jeff, Rashawn, Tim, Carter, Stefan, and Boyd jamming in a room together has me very excited. With a clean slate, there should be some serious fireworks.

Maybe this will mean new, road-tested songs in 2012. Cool

Aside from Lying in the Hands of God, those songs are enjoyable and respectable and all, but they aren't the kind of songs I never grow tired of like his older material.

The one song they created completely from scratch for BW (and by scratch I mean without Roi) was Squirm. That's very promising imo

Completely agree. If Dave can write lyrics as solid as Squirms lyrics consistently, this album will be pretty good.

Great news

A) If it's true
B) If the sessions actually become an album

C) If the music that results from this is any good... don't forget, the last time they went into the studio they came out with Big Whiskey...

I def say there is no reason this won't happen, the boys are still high on what's happened the last 4 years.

I think it will be very interesting to see what coffin can produce in the stereo...remember on big whiskey he only played mostly roi parts, he has the ability to be a leader on the songwriting fronts just like roi was

I think fonze will be the other important factor. he seems energized, and the creative juices are flowing, remember, he wrote some of our favorite songs and he has the most diverse taste and influence in music of anyone in the band. Plus the recent movie stuff and that extra work with Mike Mcready have me pumped

The return of Boyd would be nice, we all know carter will kill it, would be nice to see tim very involved

I think the album will be great if they continue what they did for big whiskey, like it or not, that was the first step in the right direction for the band since 2000, they have 3 virutosos in the band and they're into the music more than ever. If they revert back to just playing over dave's songs, i think it will be wasted talent.

gotta assume i know which 3, but who were you thinking?

also, you're completely right about utilizing the musicians, especially with us not seeing daves full potential in songwriting in recent years. this album has to focus on the band and the music, which has SO much potential.

im also excited to see songs written completely void of leroi. i want to see jeff bring songs from the studio to the stage and evolve them. i love what he's done with dmb's music (i respect it, anyway) but in essence they are really lerois parts and in that respect he is limited. i want to see what a musician like him with a musical history like his can do with the dmb

Re: DMB - January 2012 Studio Sessions

If Jeffs parts he writes for this new album are any bit symbolic of his work with bfft or the mu'tet oh man, are we in for a treat. And as said before, I think this band is inspired. The last 30 or so shows played have been better (on average) than the last 100+ preceding them. Let's see what they can do in the studio and hope for the best.

Cavallo is the Chairman of Warner Brothers Records. I would think that affects his availability to produce another DMB album for RCA.

Bring on Lillywhite.

Pretty confident you said that it would be released around this time. Studio sessions could mean a release in a year. Nice try though.

i believe so as well. i feel like they'd be recording in NYC or Haunted Hollow if Lillywhite was attached.
