There's a whole series of books, and there was an animated series based on them that aired on HBO when I was a kid. Strange concept. Elephant's mom gets shot like Bambi's did, and the elephant is rescued by an old French woman and taken back to Paris. He grows up, and somehow or other, he becomes king of the elephants upon his return to Africa. His rival is an angry rhinoceros, if memory serves. Adventures and life lessons ensue.
