Again and Again on the Hollywood Bowl release.
I know we're all supposed to hate L@HB/CT but Fonz sounds really good on this one.

Are we all supposed to hate those? Because I like them both a lot.

I do too. In fact, a lot of people do. But the haters are a very vocal bunch around here.

Again and Again (forever Bob Law in my heart) is awesome. I was blown away when I heard it at Cville, such a funky song.

There was this one performance of Again and Again last year that was super slowed down, kinda weird but awesome haha

Yeah, ^this. A&A is a good studio song too. But something is just missing in the post-2016 live versions...

Also, side topic, but why does it seem like the debut performances of a lot of DMB songs are the best versions?

Typical on the Rhino's Choice sampler. During the 7/4 section he drops down an octave at one point and it's suddenly filthy.

For again and again - in my opinion, it’s because we don’t have dave on keys. And it seems slowed down based on the two clips shared above. Which is rather odd because a handful of songs have been sped up since about 2012 and most have not been a positive change imho. Not sure why the reason for teh speeding “up of.” But grey street and bartender are the most obvious examples and it kills the vibe of those songs IMHO. Songs that happen to be my two favorite songs in their catalog.

Also, dave not being on keys. Buddy has a different approach to keys. He centers his sound around that of what you would hear if you go to church. It’s more of an organ type sound and it seems like his keys get lost in the song and I have trouble hearing him. I’m not sure why somebody doesn’t speak up and just ask him to start playing classic piano, like butch did. And then branch out from there. His approach is backwards ( not necessarily bad, just backwards) in that respect. The keys have always been an integral part of the band’s Jazz like feel post 98. But adding buddy hasn’t quite done the trick in my opinion. Or he just needs to make a few minor adjustments. I love DMBs sound between 99 and 2008. And maybe the guys are shooting for “different.” which would be fine. Just pointing out what I see.

I don't know about "Has nothing on...", but yes. Those tours were also a really good time.

Someone said in an earlier post why he understood why I said what I said, and he was spot on. Not sure if you were around in 2009, but at the time it was being talked up pretty tough.

But, like I said earlier, in hindsight I probably would have left out that opinion. I created this thread in 2009, and was obviously pretty pumped about the tour that was going on.

Lmao y’all buggin. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again... 09 WAS GREAT!

Look at your join dates lmao... the people who are talking shit about OP joined after the Big Whiskey hype train. You really had to be on here from Winter ‘08 thru ‘09. The anticipation/energy was palpable. And Big Whiskey was adored by people in the first few months it was out. Especially because it was so much better than Stand Up. The band was having a blast. All the little videos/rumors that trickled out through Spring ‘09, the Fuse doc which talked openly about Lillywhite for the first time in years, Blue Water getting teased... the boards were going NUTS. People liked/loved BW at first so when it was being put in setlists a lot with a sprinkle of some really cool rarities (songs that were rare at the time), people really had no complaints. Oddly enough, I think one of the most hated songs on the album at first was Baby Blue and now it’s regarded as prob the best song off of BW.

Just funny how time changes our perception.

I've never heard anyone say this before. It's an average song to me. A glorified Sister. I think most people would jump to LITHOG if asked what the best song on the album is.

Fonz is great on Cornbread, YMDT, Bayou, a lot of the songs we kind of don't like so much. But maybe they get played a lot because he likes them and it has some cool bass parts.

Always really liked him on the breakdown in Die Trying. He's got a great part in Dreamgirl too, I think people overlook that a lot.
