Re: Live Trax 37 - 11/11/92 - Trax
Also, as a musician who dabbles in recording from time to time, I agree it's pretty amazing what they can do with DMBlive recordings. If you think that all the individual mics that are pointed at each drum, and then mix that with all the other instruments down to one single track... it's incredible it doesn't sound like gobbledly gook. But that's why the drums may sound hollow, or Boyd's voice may be loud and clear, or Roi's sax is a bit tinny and quiet. It was mixed for that particular venue on that particular night. Some places certain tones or levels need to be mixed differently than others. A Sax is generally pretty loud, so it didn't need to be turned up as much as the keyboard, which would have no sound with an amp and it's probably plugged straight into the soundboard so there's a direct signal.
It probably sounded fantastic if you were there, but once it's all recorded, all those instruments are in permanent place. There's no individual level or fader to change them. They can mess with EQs more than a taper could, to bring out certain tones that may be missing, or blend in something that sticks why out, but that's really it. That's why an actual tape may indeed sound better than a soundboard pull. It just depends on the night and the venue. You'll get more true sounds from the soundboard, but you'll get a better overall mix from a quality tape who's mix was in the room that night capturing what ears heard. What would be perfect is a hybrid of both. I think DMBlive has done that on a release or two as well.
It makes LT37 that much more special, to get a recording this far down the road that was able to be remixed per se.
