Gold isn't that useful. Happy investing!

Gold standard was terrible and isn't viable. The government sets the law on money and that gives you trust in the currency. That's what our currency's value is based on. The government gives it intrinsic value because it is based around laws. You goldilocks investors are hilarious.

The problem with taking governments word on the backing of money and how much it's worth is....well look at how awful the dollar has become and how in debt the entire world has become. You can't just *create* money, that's defeats the purpose of it having value. There is only so much gold and silver in the world, which is where "value" comes from.

dont bother...all one needs to look at is where gold was in 2000 vs. now, compared to any other major investment class

It really isn't a viable system.

Though your point is kind of right. Why is gold this thing that everyone claims will be needed when shit goes bad? Whose to determine it is better than a pack of smokes? Because it's pretty?

This is actually a great interview from a very smart guy (Neil Irwin) about the role of central banks, bank regulation, gold-standard viability (that it isn't), and other stuff (Fresh Air owns):

    http://www.npr.org/2013/04/08/175950...of-the-economy

As to Bitcoin itself, jsut about read any article from a reputable site and you'll see it's terrible.

it would not be beneficial IN the SHTF scenario...it is held for after, when systems would reset and gold, as an historical precedent, the most likely thing of perceived value to carry any clout...

The dollar is going the way of the Zimbabwe dollar, the only thing keeping it up is OPEC and its petrodollar status. Once that goes, which you have been seeing cracks of for over a decade, the dollar goes with.
