Re: Share your unpopular DMB opinions.

I dont care for the 3rd verse of Grey Street. Worst of the 3 verses, and I'm fine with it going away again.

You've both found the right thread for this one.

I like the third verse, but I will admit I mostly wanted it back so they could play all three choruses again. I love the way Dave adds to the lyrics with each one and it always felt way too quick with only two.

Then this club is formed! Small as it may be.

It just sounds to me like something a Jr High kid writes for his talent show song, clunky and awkward.

I don't see why people plead for more Bismarck. Or a studio cut of it. The song doesn't do much for me.

It's not the lyrics that matter...it's the build of the song for the 3rd verse and the chorus. The BS version each verse and chorus gets longer and builds to climax that has so much more harmonic power than without.

The words aren't the issue for me, it's the missing music, so I'm glad it's back, as long as it is back and really hope to get to hear it at our shows this year.

This might not be unpopular, just polarizing. I like the stop time intro to Warehouse. Anything with crowd participation is good. Except for singing Thank You at the end of So Damn Lucky.

Agree. Of course I miss the violin on some stuff, but I was lucky enough to fall off for a few years and get back into the band right as Buddy joined. I really enjoy him and especially him the last few shows. He's also playing more of Boyd's parts for certain songs which I appreciate.

He never grew as a musician, and was content to ride the coat tails of DMB. He virtually didn't write songs we love, what reasons should the band have kept him if they are now capable of getting a replacement that is much better than him?

Grey Street is a dark ass song that doesn't fully come through without the third verse though. "Take what you can from your dreams, make them as real as anything" from the stranger in V3, after asking (preying) in V2 if she has to get out of it on her own, the stranger's sort of trying to help her out. Instead, she treats the stranger as a "crazy man" and instead continues to sit in her sorrow/depression. So she really won't do "anything to fill it in," or she can't. She uses the stranger as another reason to not change and remain the same.

Without V3, at least the way I hear it, she's left preying and waiting, but with it she's found a reason to stay where she's at despite someone seemingly trying to help her. Much darker.

I don’t disagree that V3 brings it all together, but I think after V2(traditionally) when Dave jumps to “she feels like kicking out all the windows….she would change everything about her…but all colors mix together to grey” it reveals the depressed mindset of the subject. She prays to whatever higher power for the courage and strength to “kick out the windows and set fire to this life,” and if she could find that strength, she would “change everything about her, using colors bold and bright”—the colors in this case are the depressed attitudes being changed out a with positive and vibrant outlook on life.

But in the end she can’t muster up that strength to do so, so the potential for “bold and bright” attitudes to become reality simply disappear and she feels the hopelessness she’s always felt—all of those colors mix to grey.

    And it breaks her heart.

I’m not trying to offer any earth shattering analysis that no ones thought of—just trying to say you don’t necessarily need to third verse to bring the song together. I think that final chorus by Dave, no matter where it happens in the song, is what wraps things up.

Before all the "cold blue ice" stuff there was the Lillywhite Session Grey Street.

"And the man she calls her father, ignores her and ignores her pain." Dave was a deity on that album.

3rd verse completes the song, best verse and builds the choruses- saying it sucks and is the worst verse should be an unpopular opinion yes

I forgot that the LWS Grey Street had a final reprise ON TOP of the 3rd verse.

"look down at your heaven/don't convince yourself your done/just cause the things around you seem heavy/doesn't mean you can't get off this ground

You are technically very right, and let me thank you for going deep on the song meaning (not ironic).
What I meant to say is that, the way I listen to a live show is way different to the way I listen to a studio CD. When is DMB LIVE, the things I get more excited of are the jams, the new arrangements, the interpolations, the segues.
Musically speaking, to me, the third verse is ok, but I don’t get as excited as an amazing Carter’s solo or a sax jam. That was my unpopular thought because I see that most of the people was so ecstatic because in Raleigh and last night in Tampa (and, at this point, I think they will carry on for the rest of the tour) Grey had the third verse. I simply wanted to say that, while probably this verse changes the meaning of the song and completes it, from pure musical stand point, it doesn’t add that much to the song.
When I am thinking back and highlighting the best of each night, I tend to focus on other aspects (best of Raleigh for me was Marsalis, best of Charlotte were Seek Up and Lying in the Hands of God).

The third verse makes the song very specific, while the previous two could be interpreted different ways. The crazy man isn’t a stranger,it is his behavior that is crazy.Fear, loss of hope and death.

I was fine with them cutting The Last Stop in half. Never been a huge fan. It plods. But I do think they at least could have done the outro elsewhere in the sets a la the Liog reprise.

It doesn't pack the punch it did in 04. I'm hoping to hear it this summer because I love it, but it's a perfunctory version compared to the original ones.

Listened to the LT8 from yesterday, and it's still one of the best openers I've seen.
