The Decemberists

I searched and couldn't find a thread for this awesome band! So I'm starting one. I saw them last year at the Alabama Theatre and was blown away! Not only do they play kick ass music, they also kept me lauging the entire time. Highlight of the show was either Yankee Bayonet or the hilarious and awesome Mariner's Revenge. Just downloaded the 3-31-07 show and am loving it.

Any other fans out there?

Great band, great live shows, great personalities. They, in my opinion of course, took ideas from other bands and artists, and perfected the sound. And they live in Oregon, so we get shows regularly. :rawk

OP, Decemberists are a great band, I'm surprised that it hasn't been mentioned on here yet.

Did you see them on "The Long and Short of It" tour, or on a different one? Because that is absolutely the coolest touring idea/marketing angle ever.

What were the dates of this tour?
    I saw them maybe late 2007? (August-November)
    But that's a ballpark estimate.

It was through that time, but not every stop was part of that tour, if that makes sense. What they did is every venue got two nights. The first night, the set was all of their long songs, about 6/7 minutes+. The second night was a long list of their shorter songs.

Caught them on Austin City Limits on Sunday. Pretty good. My grandfather wasn't impressed - he's critical of all guitar players. (Because he's 89 and still is sick on his Guild.)

The band in the second half was horrible.

Picaresque is one of my top 10 albums of this decade, Crane Wife is decent, but has too many songs I skip. I haven't seen them live yet, hopefully they'll tour again soon

    Re: The Decemberists

Well, Colin has written a couple albums worth of dark dark songs, but I believe he may have hit rock bottom. Here's a live performance of a song from their upcoming album. It's called Night/Rake.

    http://home.comcast.net/~idiotek/meloy-night_rake.mp3

    I. Couple

And wasn't it a lovely night?
    So alive, with fireflies
    providing us their only light

And here we made a bed of boughs
and thistledown that we had found
to lay upon the dewy grass

And isn't it a lovely way
you got in from our play
    Isn't it babe?
    A sweet little baby

And wasn't it a lovely breeze?
That swept the leaves of autumn ease
and then to brush our blushing mouths

And here we done our little dance
and we were left to catch our breath
so swiftly lifting from our chests

and isn't it a lovely way?
You got in from our play
    Isn't it babe?
    Sweet little baby

    II. Villain

I had entered to a marriage
In the summer of my 21st year
And the bells rang for our wedding
Only now do I remember it clear

All right, all right, all right

No more a rake and no more a bachelor
I was wedded and it whetted my thirst
Until her womb started spilling out babies
Only then did I reckon my curse

All right, all right, all right
All right, all right, all right

First came Isaiah with his crinkled little fingers
Then came Charlotte and that wretched girl Dawn
Ugly Mefen she died on delivery
    Mercifully taking herr mother along

All right, all right, all right

What can one do when one is a widower?
Shamefully saddled with three little pests
All I wanted was the freedom of a new life
So my burden I began to divest

All right, all right, all right
All right, all right, all right

Charlotte I buried after feeding her Foxglove
Dawn was easy she was drowned in the bath
Isaiah fought but was easily bested
Burned his body for incurring my wrath

All right, all right, all right
All right, all right, all right

And that's how I came your humble narrator
To be living so easy and free
I expect that you'd think that I should be haunted
But it never really bothers me

All right, all right, all right
All right, all right, all right

    Wow

    I'm sure it's a rough transcription.

Also, everyone should listen to The Hazards of Love. Musically it reminds of The Island, only in reverse order.

I love these guys. Amazing show and really nice people. Chris Funk is a very cool guy to hang out with. I dropped my camera at bonnaroo last year behind the stage they were playing, well Nate and a roadie found it and started taking pics of the roadie punching Nate. So they are very chill people if you ever hang with them

Colin Meloy always cracks me up when he has the crowds do calesthenics... at sasquatch in 06, he actually got everybody to sit down, and the folks that were still standing up got bottles thrown at them.

    wonderful band, wonderful music.

Love this band...saw them for free last summer for the first time in Millenium Park in Chicago with the symphony orchestra...to be honest they were better when they were without the orchestra...i actually went by myself after work but i randomly met the coolest chick from Oregon (go figure right), pouring rain at the end, but this girl could not have been a better random free concert buddy. great times, great band!!

Always The Bridesmaid is now umm... torrentable. It is only 6 songs, a little tide-me-over until their next real album drops next year. O New England and Days Of Elaine are nice little pop songs, but Record Year and Raincoat Song are the real treats. I highly recommend giving it a listen!

Damn, it feels like half of my posts are pimping the Decemberists.

Anyway, they have released one free song from their upcoming Hazards Of Love. It's called The Rake's Song, and it is disturbingly disturbing and magically delicious.
