Much of it is rather tedious, IMO. Great record. It's grown on me a lot in the last few months

Their new studio album, The King Is Dead, came out this past Tuesday. Great way to get back to a simpler Decemberists way of recording. The tour starts on Monday at the Beacon in NYC. This is quite potentially their last year of touring and studio work before they go on hiatus (though, Colin said hiatus was too strong or an incorrect word to use or something). Look it up!

It's a great album. "This is Why We Fight" is by far my favorite track. I'm seeing them play in about 2 weeks. I'm really looking forward to it now that I've heard the new album.

    Probably the beginning.

The Crane Wife is probably their most accessible album but there are a shit ton of good songs on the albums before it. I'd start at the beginning.

Got an email last week saying Jenny Conlee, Decemberists keyboardist/pianist/accordianista, has breast cancer. I have had the pleasure of meeting Jenny a couple times and she is a warm and engaging person. Pisses me off. Screw you, cancer. Stay away from my favorite people.

Yeah, that's how I found out about them. I haven't any of their stuff except for the one or two songs I heard on Pandora.

Tarkio's best song is probably Devil's Elbow or Save Yourself. Definitely look Save Yourself up, great song.

Anywho, new EP came out yesterday. It's actually really good. Much more decemberists-ish than their last album was.

One of my absolute top 3 favorite bands, along with DMB and the Hold Steady. Miss them, it's been too long.

Seeing Colin in Portland. The record he will be selling on this tour is Colin sings the Kinks.

Rumor is there will be a new Decemberists album in about a year. He might be playing some songs from it on the solo tour.

    Re: The Decemberists

they've been in the studio working on some stuff but nothing definite from those sessions as the rest of the band sans colin went and supported the 2nd black prarie album. john moen said that the next album will be out late 2014, so I'm guessing he means November-December. fitting.

the kinks ep will be good; one track has surfaced on NPR.

I'll be front row center at NYC, 3rd row center in Philly, 8th row in DC. Never got to see him on a solo tour. I kick myself for not seeing him in 2006. Alas, I was lucky to see him at the Newport folk fest this past summer so I cannot wait to live through this upcoming week of music. the 3 new songs he played at the folk fest were awesome, and he said he wrote 2 of them the week prior to that show. so it'll be interesting. are the songs that he's writing currently going to stick around and make it to full band, or just be solo bits? last time he played new solo stuff, it became Hazards of Love and the king is dead. but before that, IE Wonder, remained a solo song that he only plays solo to this day.

    Interesting few weeks ahead!

I remember his solo shows being on the shorter side Nothing will beat those epic Hazards shows - full set of dramatic D's uber-pretention, followed by a fun-loving old school Decemberists set One of my absolute favorite live shows I've ever seen.

    3 shows, so jealous. ;-)

yeah, anywhere from about 14-18 songs..will be interesting sets as he has so much material now..if I were him, i'd just go crazy and play like 30 songs a night. even the epics (crane wife suite, mariner's revenge, California one) are all much shorter since its just the guitar work. most of their songs are under 4 minutes

I see, I gotcha..yeah it was beautiful. I hope he plays it in NYC. i'd love to hear how intimate it sounds from the front row. it was awesome hearing it at the festival this summer solo, but i mean, festivals are open areas...it probably took away some of the awesomesauce. I heard it in NYC full band straight through (CW 1 & 2 > CW 3) and that was fucking intense.. the show opened with California one, had the whole CW suite, and then closed with mariner's revenge.. 3 of 5 epics in one show. it was nuts.

    CALIFORNIA ONE
    DOWN BY THE WATER
    ROX IN THE BOX
    CALAMITY SONG
    RED RIGHT ANKLE
    JANUARY HYMN
    DON'T CARRY IT ALL
    ALL ARISE
    WON'T WANT FOR LOVE
    THE CRANE WIFE 1
    THE CRANE WIFE 2
    THE CRANE WIFE 3
    THE INFANTA
    SIXTEEN MILITARY WIVES
    THIS IS WHY WE FIGHT
    --
    THE CHIMBLEY SWEEP
    THE MARINER'S REVENGE SONG

Oh man, nice set! First time I saw Colin he opened w/ California One. I cant wait for Chicago. I still have never heard the full CW suite live

    http://www.ifc.com/videos/sxsw-2009-...the-crane-wife

Still remember this show. This was after I made my wife listen to them, and she fell in love (and she's not much of a music person...but she's now a major D's and Ben Folds fan). So she waited in line and got us tickets for this free show for SXSW. Was at a tiny little bar, probably 200 people there. Just a magically awesome live band
