The wife and I have been talking about this on and off for the past week.

He was one of my favorite sax players (right up there with Trane, Sonny, Brecker, Coleman, Adderly, and Henderson). He had a very unique/distinct melodic voice that has not been and cannot (and should not) be replicated. Actually, Jeff is one of my favorites as well, but just a LeRoi wasn't Jeff, Jeff isn't LeRoi. He does a great job in the band, but I still miss LeRoi. Beyond the instrument, he's just one of my favorite musicians.

    Awesome post, totally agree.

(bolded my favorites, Moore is right up there with Trane and the rest)

Someone posted this is the Loving Wings thread, but I listened to it twice through immediately.

LeRoi is the truth and a masterful and magical musician.

Brilliant post, you really nailed my feelings as well. I have been reading a doctoral thesis that a music student wrote on LeRoi. The more I learn about him, the kind of person he was, his influences and experiences, the more I admire him. It only deepens the emotions he presents in his music. It is really great insight.

I know it has been discussed before, but here it is, just in case people are like me and late to the game.

Crush Warehouse 5 Vol 1 came on my itunes, Roi's first notes hit me. Oh how missed he is. What glory!!! It's "just" the line from the album, but boy he destroys them

I'm looking for an interview in which Dave talks about Roi. He mentions something to the effect of "he left a hole that can never get filled, and you just have to learn to live with it." Would anyone know where this is from or how can I find it? I can't even remember if I READ the quote or actually SAW Dave say it. Thanks!

He could really come in like a foghorn or give the most gentle whisper. And listen to Boyd with him there, too - perfect.

Roi used to light a fire in the band and especially Carter that could take jams into the stratosphere.

Hard to believe we are nearly 10 years removed from that tragic day, gut wrenching still to this day. To me, Roi's brilliance was that he effortlessly flowed between complexity and simplicity. The melodies poured so naturally, that he could deliver his or the song's emotion at any given time...those pre-crash LIOG will always top the cake for me, his solo at RR 95 is near perfection.

It's probably a bit ridiculous but I just watched a tribute video to him, as well as your all's links, and wept like a child. Thanks Roi.

Roi's horn lines on Idea of You are so on point. Curious if they have any other mid-2000's songs they recorded with LeRoi but never released. Without knowing, Idea of You feels like the last great DMB song featuring the core lineup

Went back and listened to Watchtower on the Recently EP. Man, Roi’s solo on that is insanity. Reminds you of how things change over the years. That was an early one, and pretty damn raw
