taylor vs martin

i've been playing guitar since july and like it a lot. obviously, i am not too good yet but enjoy playing and trying out new songs. i've saved up enough money and can finally buy a good guitar for myself. i either want a martin or a taylor. both seem to be the best guitars avaliable. the thing is i don't know which one to get. both are around $700 and i honestly can't tell the difference. i know people always say "test them out to see which one you prefer", but to be honest i can't feel a difference. maybe it's because i am so new at it.

anyway, i just wanted to see what people thought was a better/more comfortable guitar...

thanks

    bingo.

Stewie, it really is whichever feels better to you. Whichever sounds better to you. Hell - ask someone in the store to play each for you - see which one sounds better to you. Is one easier to make chords on? Also, there are plenty of OTHER guitar makers out there (Tacoma, Larrivee (sp?), etc.) who make fine guitars. Try them as well. It comes down to (as cliched and overused as it is on here) what YOU LIKE. It's hard to go wrong with a decent Martin or Taylor, though. I prefer Taylors, but there are some Martins that have impressed me.

Try an Alvarez. Go play one, they sound and feel great, and are relatively inexpensive. More practical too for you at this stage.

ahhh yes, the ongoing and never ending debate: which brand is better? Martin or Taylor? I am biased and I prefer a Martin. I went to a store, I tried both, but it was the Martin that stole my heart, not a Taylor. The truth of the matter is this: they are both top of the line guitar brands, both are high quality, but it is just simply a matter of YOUR OWN preference in sound.

When I tried them I found that the Taylors have a brighter tone. It is beautiful. It very much stands out.

Martins have a very rich sound particularly a full rich bassy tone to it. To me, Martins sound like velvet. They also smell better than anything else on this earth (but that's besides the point).

If you are thinking of spending $700 on one I'd say wait a little longer. While you will still get a nice guitar of either models, you will be getting just about the lowest end of each. I suggest waiting on it a little longer and be willing to invest AT LEAST $1000 and you will be getting prettty good bang for your buck, especially if you're looking at a place that offers good deals. I bought my guitar at buffalo brothers in san diego and they have a wide selection. they also have an online store i think its http://buffalobrosguitars.com

just try a few and see what you prefer. i'm all for the martin though, but that's just my personal opinion...

depends how much someone will give for it man.

after a year...I'd give about $300.00 to the $450.00 range.

I wouldn't figure on much more than that... Whatever you buy - keep. If you think you'll want to upgrade to something more expense, just wait and save...

im assuming you just want an acoustic guitar, not an acoustic electric (from what i can tell, you should be getting just a plain acoustic.)
I have the Martin DX1 acoustic guitar, which retails for about $500. And let me tell you, it's one of the nicer sounding acoustic guitars ive heard. MY friend bought a $1300 Martin acous/elec and he thinks mine still sounds better. I like taylors and all, but for just acoustic, you cannot beat the full rich martin sound. But they best thing to do is to listen to both, and see which one you think sounds better.
superjen had a good description of what the general tone will be for each.
    Good luck

buy the one YOU like better....

    I own a Taylor....but someday I'll probably own a Martin.
I think they both make fantastic guitars.

What turned me off from Martin was the profile of the neck.....it just doesn't work so great with my hands.....makes them cramp up a little.

But, my technique has improved over the years....and Martin necks don't bother me as much now

yea, I'd definately go with a lesser priced guitar given your experience level. I mean, there are some out there who've been playing for decades, and still have a semi-professional instrument and love it to death. Although it is what suits your tastes, with your level of playing it seems that you'd be better off with at most a semi-professional Ibanez, Alvarez, Ovation or the like. I'm not trying to put you down by any means, I'm just saying that Martins and Taylors are made for the big shot abled...I own neither, 1) becuase i dont feel like i deserve to play one yet 2) I like the sound I get from my Hohner acoustic/electric...I've been playing for about 5 years, and after college when I get some money, I'll def. invest in one eventually.
And as for the debate, Taylors and Martins are designed for different purposes. Martins are designed for a more thick folk/rythim sound, whereas Taylors are better for high end stuff like timmys solos. I personally have been really impressed with both the Martins and Taylors I've played, and if I had to pick one, I'd say Martin (not just because I'm from Pennsylvania, where they're made), but it just suited me better. In conclusion, you don't need a professional instrument at your level of playing and Martins smell AMAZING! (ever go into a store and pick one up to smell it?)...i do..

i'd have to say taylor just cuz i've played a hella lot more taylors than martins... so i really have no room for comparison

I own both, 2 Taylors and a Martin. I love Martins, and I love Taylors. They both have different qualities, Martins are mellow, not a lot of treble. Taylors will cut through the mix, they are a bright guitar. So it depends on what you play, if you will play with a band, or like has been said and will stand forever: whatever one you like is the best one for you.
