Prospective Boyd Replacement Discussion

At this point we don't know if he is being replaced, and I'm sure a lot of people would prefer it if he wasn't replaced, but others, including myself, think there is room for improvement in the sound of the band if they bring in the right replacement.

Either way, it doesn't hurt to discuss it. Who would you want to join the band?

A couple of names I've seen discussed on the forums so far are:

Lindsey Stirling - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q9hOTEPRxs

Allie Kral - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFMQQ8RPiPo

Sara Watkins - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gi8au3_BnM

Miranda Mulholland - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7p89XbkMwU

Edit: And obviously, Jimmy DeMartini - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6-QlKRTcU8

In general I think finding another violin player, who is audible in live shows, would be the right decision and would improve the overall quality of music while keeping things fresh for the rest of the band. Any of those names above would help move things forward in a positive direction!

Yellowcard broke up last year they could snag Sean Mackin. Who wouldn't love a DMB Ocean Avenue cover?

Holy shit, I started watching this video and was like, WTF, this band has a fiddle player??? Then his solo started, and he's actually pretty awesome.

Out of those options Jimmy DeMartini is the obvious choice. He would fit in the best with the band. The others, though talented, would change the sound so much.

No one can really replace him IMO. I think they go a similar route as they did when Butch left and evolve their sound. I bet they bring either Joe Lawlor (between him & Tim they’ll develop “replacement” solos for BT’s parts) or Robert Randolph. Either could sound great but not the same. Just different.

Please check out Lindsey sterling if you haven’t. She isn’t exactly the same type of music as dmb but she is absolutely incredible.

If they don’t replace him with a violin, I’m gonna ask for a refund/sell my tickets. They aren’t a rock band. No interest in seeing them cosplay as one.

This assumes they can only play the style of the band they're currently in though.

I know a concert violinist in the Austin symphony who plays in local country bands on weekend nights.

Point being, a great violin player can play multiple styles.

Good point. I just listened to the youtube clips and Jimmy sounded like the best fit. You're right, I'm sure they can change their style.

Eyvind Kang. Dude is an amazing musician and composer. I saw him play at a John Zorn show (music composed and conducted by) and I was transfixed. He can play eastern and western style music interchangeably. I don’t think DMB would be able to pull him away from what he was doing for a year, but it would be awesome.

I definitely agree that Jimmy is the best fit; plus he already knows the material. I think he's a no-brainer pick.

As we were discussing in the other thread though, ZBB is in a much better place than DMB is right now, so I'm not sure if DMB could realistically poach him, even if he is a huge fan.

You never know, there was a top QB recruit in this year's class that stuck with Princeton when Alabama came knocking.

I would be able to get over hearing a replacement play Boyd’s parts on songs where the violin part is really just a composition.

But songs where there’s an intense solo, like ants , liog, Nancies etc, I’m not sure. Would feel weird.

But then again I felt the same way in 2008 and it took one song for me to jam out to a jeff solo.

Don't Edward Sharpe and Old Crow Medicine Show both have violinists too? I dont think Edward Sharpe have any dates planned and Old Crow only has a couple summer dates.

I think those iconic solos will be okay as long as the new guy/gal makes them their own and does them their own way. People are going to resent it if they go out there and try to match Boyd skree for skree on LIOG.

Perhaps they could get an 11 year old. Hell, they might even also talk about Narnia!

Doesn't matter who the replacement is or how talented they are, it feels wrong. DMB is fairly unique in how every single member makes the band what they are and none of them are truly replaceable. Jeff Coffin plays a lot of his parts as Roi did and it sounds absolutely nothing like Roi. They're becoming a cover band...of themselves

Two completely different situations obviously, not sure what else DMB was supposed to do when Roi passed, Roi picked Jeff

You couldn't even hear Boyd when he played the past few years.
