I like it, but the vocal production and the simple drum beat make it a perfect song to fit in on Stand Up.

It's cool to see these guys openly talking about it.

Yeah, this version is money. Dave's voice, and Stefan's bass

This is actually a really good idea. It could have a pretty big impact if enough people did this (Not sure about 25$, but just any donation you can afford with the memo "Batson Sessions" attached) I think it would be a good way to show them that the fans are grateful for this bands work and were not just a bunch of greedy a-holes with no respect.

Early Home is really great. And on top of that, it would fit perfectly in pretty much any romantic movie that involved cheating lol. Hope to hear this song in E1 soon.

That or Early Home. I think for me it's Early Home first, then Drive Me Away.

So is Soprano Guitar a work of Shotgun? Definitely sounds rough around the edges.

Agreed. On second listen I finally realized what early home actually meant and my heart sank a bit.

I just got through the first disc...

I really dig KTK and Break Free.
IOY and Can’t Stop are REALLY rough. CT is miles ahead. So much so I’m actully coming around on my hatred of them.
Soprano Guitar was really neat to hear a faster Shotgun riff.
After the first pass I think my favs are Fonz and ABC.

Now with that said, I think you can tell the spots where Batson did Batson things. Some of the tracks sound like Stand Up 2.0 while some sound more raw. The raw ones sound better.

    On to the winter disc.

Winter disc is much better, but still in rough form. Enjoy. Did you notice the Break Free outro on ABC?

It is likely a very early take of the song when they were just feeling it out, it wouldn't be played live until two months later.

I keep going back to Red Glare. Ask is also a fun little tune.

Considering the spring disc is dated April and shotgun debuted in June I’d guess it would be vice versa.

But, who really knows when that particular riff was first written and at what speed.

    1) Drive Me Away
    2) Break for It
    3) Early Home
    4) #27
    5) Bullets and Rum
    6) Kill the King
    7) Scream into the Grave
    8) ABC
    9) Robert Randolph
    10) Celebrate

Not necessarily in order, but very happy to add these to my library. Red Glare seems to be the only one that most others like that isn't working for me. I love Shotgun and Break Free in general, but won't be revisiting these recordings often.

Alternatively, if you want to try and tell a story:

    1. ABC

    4. Come On Come On
    5. Break For It
    6. Can't Stop
    7. Again and Again
    8. Bullets and Rum
    9. When I'm Weary
    10. Early Home
    11. Shotgun
    12. Drive Me Away
    13. Celebrate
    14. Scream Into The Grave

I will never understand how tracks like Early Home and Drive Me Away were discarded in favor of what ultimately made it onto Stand Up. Even some of the rough ideas here do way more for me than garbage like Everybody Wake Up or Hunger ever did.

I have to assume these decisions are 99% Dave's. As wonderful as it is to get to hear this stuff, I can't help but be disappointed thinking of what could have been.

You are correct that they are better but considering these recordings happened after Stand Up came out, no way to know if Early Home or Drive Me Away were ever played during the Stand Up sessions.

These sessions were after Stand Up. With that said, I don't understand how those weren't included on any of the albums that came out after Stand Up.

I agree with the guy (not sure what his name is) on the Ants Podcast: these sessions make Come Tomorrow look that much worse. There's definitely some really good stuff here, and considering that they went back to these sessions to get material from, it's crazy.

Good point, I guess I was assuming that these existed in one form or another during the Stand Up sessions, only because both cuts are so much more polished than much of the other stuff on here.

Does anyone have the studio leaks/versions of other songs that never made it to an album somewhere?? I used to have some of them and had a hard drive crash.

We might be hyping these sessions a bit much. Yes there are 3 to 4 tunes that would have been nice on CT but I don't devalue the album because I heard a few rough demos from sessions 12 years ago.

Also, if I remember correctly, was CT supposed to have some 18 to 20 tunes on it at some point? I'd be really interested to see what those extra 4 to 6 songs were going to be, some of which I am sure were from the Batson Sessions.

Was out of town over the weekend, just discovered this existed. Downloading now, pretty stoked to listen.

Does the 3rd disc pre-date the two we have? That image of the 3 discs looked like it referenced 2005 for the first disc.

Funny you mention LBV vibes. I feel a link between Early Home and Hello Again.

But over the summer I made a post about Hello Again having lyrics that feel like a follow up the LBV. Obviously the connecting theme is a simple one, but it's interesting to draw the comparison

I thought the same, so I looked up the date and they had a concert that night

    http://dmbalmanac.com/TourShowSet.as...=83&where=2005

So its probably unlikely. My guess was that it might be written in the international format, even though the other discs aren't. That would mean 05/05/2006, which lies between the two sessions (just after the first session by about 2 weeks) and at a time the band was free from other obligations.

    Just spitballing though

So its probably unlikely. My guess was that it might be written in the international format, even though the other discs aren't. That would mean 05/05/2006, which lies between the two sessions (just after the first session by about 2 weeks) and at a time the band was free from other obligations.

    Just spitballing though
Was just looking into this. I'm a bit confused myself. Ants has no studio session listed in tour central that matches the date of the first (and earliest disc) in the picture that was circulated. We know that there was another session AFTER the sessions that already leaked. Mark pretty much confirmed this with his tweet the other day stating that there are more final versions. Ants also has a studio session in January of 2007 listed in tour central. I suppose it's possible that the band recorded and then played a show on 060505, but I guess its also possible the disc is mis-dated.

I wonder if Jake has any insight on this.

Edit: Actually, Robert Randolph tweeted that there is another jam he was involved in that was not included in the leaked sessions. The dmbalmanac link for 060505 show has Robert Randolph listed as a guest that night. It would line up then that they recorded with Randolph earlier in the day somewhere.

That was probably the date(s) the producer put those disks together. He rough mixed them after the band already left. A progress report as of (insert date) probably at the conclusion of each session.

There's some good raw material here, but these are definitely not even remotely on par with the quality of songs on tLWS.

Yea its not 100% clear, but I saw Randolph played with them that day. It was N2 of a 2 night stand though, so it seems strange to have played a show the night before, wake up, record some new music, then play another show that night.

Boyd also played with Robert Randolph the night before the April 21 session, which makes sense how/why he ended up in the studio with them then. If the date is international, the "3rd disc" would have only been 2 weeks later, so Randolph could have stuck around or returned to the studio with them too.

Interesting point, but my guess from the roughness of these is they were just song concepts and most of the mixing was done on the fly by Batson as they were laying down track ideas. The later completed ideas that he was referencing were probably full band efforts that were fully mixed post. Could be a day-of-burned date though.
