Sadly, but truly I agree.
Boyd often played out of key live and just played the same extremely similar solo over and over again for every song. I have several friends who are professional violinists (who play across genres) who feel he was way under skilled.
Regardless, there is no doubt he was a huge contributor to the band and its sound - and I love watching him play as part of the band. Any criticisms have always been balanced by accepting the band for what it is and what they accomplish as a whole. Boyd and the violin have always been an important part of DMB but Boyd’s contribution and perhaps ability (him being demphasized in the mix for live shows is obvious) have started to wane.
Seriously, I will miss Boyd, but I hope they can breathe some life back into the violin.
