There is actually a pretty big learning curve with vinyl, so I understand why the consumer is ignorant and the seller is taking advantage.
For me, I started an equal parts collector and listener-- I've never collected in the sense that I needed super rare, special colored, limited edition stuff, but it was like, oh wow, this album exists on vinyl, I love this album, I'm buying it. I want that in my collection-- done. You start to realize that A LOT of albums exist on vinyl. When I first started it was like, no way Low End Theory on vinyl?! Sick!

Now I understand that MOST of the albums I want exist in OP or RP.
So over time, that has turned into more of a scenario where I want an album, but then do research to find reviews on the quality, look for the best source/version of that album, etc. I don't need top of the line sourcing/pressing for every record, but I have bought a couple albums that sounded like crap, so that's mostly what I'm trying to avoid there.
I now understand that there is a lot of garbage out, and as I've had my set-up now for 2.5 years, I've fallen in love with the sound quality and that's what I'm seeking out now. And to me, that's how you further the hobby! The novelty has a ceiling, the sound quality's ceiling is as high as your bank account is comfortable with. So you add little things here and there to the set up, you start to care for your investment more (inners, outers, cleaners), make upgrades. You're building something that is very much your own all the while the music of your life, those albums and songs that are essentially a part of you become more clear, better sounding, more alive. That's the love for me right there.
Most people haven't reached that point though and I'd bet most never will. It's novelty, it's cool/hip, it's a display of taste, etc for kids my age especially (I'm 26).
And most people don't have their personal Doby (others of you have given me awesome advice, no offense, Doby is just a beast obviously) in their own small little corner of the internet. That's been huge this last year.
So, ugh, thanks everyone. Love this thread.
