Re: Where is Bartender?

That bartender was extremely flat.. the step was pretty good but for one it’s missing Boyd’s plucking and give me a version with some actual improv lyrics in the intro over Dave mumbling over and over again.

This band killed those songs back in 2008 and 2010. That staples center bartender is easily a top 5 performance of all songs since 2008. And carters dynamics and soloing were way better on that AC caravan two step.

Taste in music is subjective, and you admit to the subjectiveness by using the word 'opinions', but yet you follow that up with claims of objectivity such as "but maybe go back and listen to them... that's legitimately one of the worst takes I've read..."

And I, like the poster you're responding to here, think differently. I think they've been VERY on-point lately with their song arrangements, and have been returning to a "less-intense" style of playing, which I fully welcome.

Hope to see it again at Holmdel, and I'm also really glad to hear Dave officially confirm Buddy will be back for more tours.
    Agree completely!

And Dave's comment WAS quite nice to hear, for more reasons than one...

im sorry but some rusty-ish versions of songs that have been played 1 and 2 times this tour do not rival ones when they were destroying those songs on a regular basis years back.

I can maybe understand that take on the two step, maybe, but the reasons I pointed out above with plucking and real improv lyrics make a huge difference in how the song was originally intended to sound.

Theres a bunch of fair complaints about that bartender posted on the previous pages. That wasnt even an objectively good version of the song in general.

The plucking isn't really all that important. So if I saw a monster version without the plucking it's not going to make a deference.

if the argument is that things sound more dynamic now, id have to think anyone that wants that would rather have boyd plucking than timmy playing it on electric.

For me thats a huge energy/build up moment of the song.

Tim had a solo on it since like 2008. The only difference in the song now is a is no plucking.

Actually, the thing I like about the song now vs most of 3.0. Is Carter soloing off of the music instead of soloing completely alone. It seems when he solos off the music it's much better.

I'm glad people are enjoying the sound, and Bartender.

Did anyone else notice Dave's voice dropping low once in awhile during the song? I understand it was for affect but it just seemed off.

“an objectively good version”...you just don’t get it, do you? Music that is. Please enlighten - which versions, from which years, featuring which band members playing which parts, are we allowed to like, enjoy, or get excited about, per your personal (but evidently also objective) preferences?

You may also want to consider at least the possibility that some of us aren’t quite as plucking obsessed as you are.

hey if you enjoy it good for you.. but based on comments in here it sure seems like more people didnt think that was a great version of bartender than ones that do.

Agree with the sentiment here - Bartender, Seek Up, Two Step and other "Boyd songs" simply do not sound as good without him.

It became one as soon as it presented an opportunity to feed this narrative.

I was impressed they brought it back, and while it is missing Boyd's signature intro, Jeff and RR did a good job of playing that line. It's different yes, but if the other option is no bartender, I'll take this. It doesn't ruin the song.
I like the band actively working on bringing the Boyd heavy songs back into the sets. They will only get better. Buddy's contributions are fresh and exciting.
It's never going to sound like it was. Either accept that and enjoy what is, or move on.

They haven't played it in 5 years. It sounded pretty darn good. It's not comparable to years past. It's a new thing.

both songs were played in 2016 multiple times.

Nowhere did I say I dont want to hear it, I hope to get it at gorge, and nowhere did I say I was unhappy it didnt sound like old, its impossible for it to.

I dont think it sounded great but I think if they keep playing it it will get better, but I have little faith it will stay in rotation.

Totally agree here, really glad its back, enjoyed some of the new differences and sound with Buddy, and really hope its sticks around and they polish it up a bit more. Was one of the highlights of the weekend for me.

shouldnt have used 'objective'.. to me, it wasnt a good version. If someone else thinks it was thats fine, to me it was a hollow version of the song. But I think in the grand scheme of things if you compare it, its clearly in the bottom say 10% of performances of that song at minimum.

Pretty much this. I enjoyed every second of it once I got past the weirdness of hearing the horns do the droning and then realizing that they were actually playing Bartender.
