    Re: if phish put together dmb's setlists....

    they'd look like a bunch of songs put together to make a show?

    i don't understand what you're getting at? do you mean would they be more varied like phish sets? no, DMB is apparently not capable of playing sets in the same way.

    the question is kind of odd since DMB's ability to "jam" is limited to structure whereas phish could and probably did, alter their sets on the fly at times. DMB might add or drop a song but that's bout it. I'm assuming you're looking for segues and stuff.

    Basically I think this is a silly idea so feel free to disregard what i've said

    good thread. i think i know what your getting at. If Phish was to put together one say, say, Saturday, N1 at Alpine, it would probably be something like this.

    Set1
    Halloween >> THe Last Stop >> Jam >> Song that Jane Likes >> Cornbread, You Never Know, The Long Black Veil >> Crash

    Set2
    Good Good Time>>Stay or Leave, Blue Water >> Lie in Our Graves, Big Eyed Fish >> Grey Street, JTR >>Anyone seen the Bridge >> Tripping Billies, American Baby

    Encore
    Last Stop Reprise , Kit Kat Jam >> You Can Call Me Al

    The point is, I think, that Phish would try to surprise you everynight. I know when Trey was on Dave and Friends in 2003, he kept telling Dave, more music, more music, play new stuff

    Ok, I will! I don't think DMB isn't capable of of playing sets where it's changing on the fly, I just think they like a structured set more than a set that happens as they go.

    Re: if phish put together dmb's setlists....

    You're all idiots. (EDIT: NOT ALL OF YOU!!! just the ones saying "4 hour jam" and so on and so forth) It would boil down to whatever DMB songs that Phish wanted to play (hahah WOW that sounds retarded.) DMB is playing what DMB wants to play. Phish played what Phish wanted to play, and it involved some songs that were older and didn't get much play more often than when DMB dusts off a classic.

    Let me give this a shot. Remember, "->" is direct segue. > is more of an abstract fade, not much time in between songs but not necessarily directly related. Possibly it would be described to friends as "then they went into..."

    Two Step ->
    Ants Marching
    Shotgun
    JTR >
    Recently (Boyd and Roi do the old intros in syncopated horn/violin voices rather than Dave doing vocals)
    Lie In Our Graves (Dance Away outro and Recently vocal reprise)
    You Never Know (something cool happens to make it a strong closer. use your imagination)

    -set break-

    Rhyme and Reason (Last Stop outro)
    Where Are You Going (breakdown is elaborated on; Dave and Stefan alternate riffs in a freeform jam)
    Sister (Dave solo)
    Good Good Time (Carter on bass, Stefan on keys, Butch on percussion kit)
    The Stone
    The Idea Of You
    #41 (extended piano solo) ->
    Two Step Jam (Butch only) ->
    #41 outro
    Song That Jane Likes
    ---
    Tripping Billies ->
    Grey Street

    This is completely off the cuff with minimal editing. But look how it leaves SO much on the table for the next night. And the night after that. And so on. This music has endless potential. It's a shame that the Too Much reprise of '04 and the LIOG reprise of last night are one-offs and that stuff like that doesn't happen more often... you'd sit if you weren't sure what was going to happen during WAYG. SOME of you would at least.

    I think people often forget that band members aren't the only ones set lists are for. The light guys, the sound guys...a lot of the crew uses the set list in a show. The more that has to go on while you're playing the harder it is to just randomly change the set list.

    Just thought I would add that for all you who are saying DMB can't just play a song on the fly or whatever

    They would probably be smart enough to realize DMB is not a jam band and the sets would look the way they do now.
