Will the final Seahawks play be remembered as the worst gaffe in sports history?

There have been millions if not billions of plays over the history of sports, so there is very little chance the last play actually was the worst gaffe, but with the game garnering the highest ratings ever, being the most tweeted game ever, the stakes, the circumstances, etc., will that play go down in history as the worst?

that was a huge boner, but it was game 6. that didn't lead as directly to a loss as [insert pithy name for whatever that was last night that hasn't been coined yet]

Probably will be remembered that way...with ESPN, Facebook, twitter, etc that play will be dissected for the next few weeks, so we'll never be able to forget it

I say yes. It's obviously impossible to say for sure what would have happened had they called a run, but I do think it's easily the dumbest decision ever made in the history of sports.

JvdV was bad but that was a whole series of boners. it's tough to point out one particular decision in that gaggle of boners and say that one thing is why he blew it like you can look at just that one play call

I think it should mostly be remembered as an incredible defensive play.

I don't necessarily disagree given the stage and what was on the line, but everyone and their mother knew that Pedro needed to come out. Sox went from leading to losing in about 6 pitches. Especially dumb considering their two lights out BP guys were warmed up. Still mind boggling after all these years.

I always remember an old one involving the Eagles, just looked it up, Giants are up by 4 with the ball and seconds left in the game, Eagles have no timeouts. All the Giants have to do is take a snap and a kneel down. But Giants run a running play, fumble the handoff, Herm Edwards on the Eagles picks it up and runs it back for the winning touchdown. Obviously no where near the importance, but a worse playcall. At least Carroll was trying to win the game.

great play by Butler, but the call was so bad that it can only be remembered as a blown play call

You can't compare an error like bill buckner. Two different things.

Chris Webber's timeout is a better comparison to the Seahawks.

This. It's not that the throw was bad or the Seahawks executed poorly. Just a great defensive play. But it should have never had the opportunity to happen.

they aren't different to me...i know there aren't "play calls" in baseball, but a routine grounder through the legs is equally as bad as Russel Wilson not checking out of that play call...i bet a veteran QB checks out of that play, it just wasn't there AT ALL. and even if you don't audible, then you throw it away, out of the endzone and live for another down. NEVER force it inside, dumb all around by the seahawks

it was a bad throw also, gotta put that ball on the right hip, down low, when throwing over the middle like that (but again, it should've never come to that)

Except that it seems the play was there. I don't think its nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. Prisoners of the moment.

it absolutely was not there, nor was it the correct play call

I think arguing whether it was "there" or not kind of misses the point though. even if the play is wide open, calling it at all introduces the potential for a whole lot of negative outcomes that calling something else does not.
