First of all, if you're laughing out loud at that, your threshold is way too low.
Secondly, that quote does not have the word "debut" in it. So it indeed does mean what was originally intended about it being an '04 song.

Fonzi might have riffed Red Glare back then, but was it actually "Red Glare" or just a riff Fonzi liked with no plans for it? Yeah I get what you're saying, and I agree. A riff being noodled / "teased" doesn't mean the song was actually written or composed back then. Some of which had been on Dave / the bands mind for many years before ever materializing. Some to less a degree (Red Glare, JTR, The Riff, LITHOG, etc.) and some to a more developed level (Rapunzel, Raven, Captain, etc.)

And some were entirely different songs that evolved. (What Will Become of Me, Leave Me Praying, Don't Burn the Pig, etc.) Even though this is all super nerdy, it fascinates me.

To try and answer your question, Dodo, I think it's a bit of a grey area. I personally think an idea becomes the "song" when it has the chords, some kind of consistent theme/melody, and a resemblance of the final song structure. Obviously there are tons of ways to evaluate this and there probably isn't one correct answer. Some folks would say a song is the song when the artist feels like the song is the song. But shit changes, songs develop and drop sections, lyrics change, etc.

#41 was so wildly different when played back in april of 95 compared to february of 96. But there's enough recognizable elements for me to call that #41, though still an early version.

Leave me praying on the other hand, I would call a different song than Don't Drink the Water that morphed into DDTW, leaving LMP as a predecessor.

I agree, maybe it wasn't titled Raven yet, and maybe it was originally going to be a section of what became Little Thing. But he is definitely playing Raven, the right chords and multiple sections and all. It actually sounds really damn good.
