Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Watched two of the highly touted documentaries of this year today. Minding The Gap and Three Identical Strangers. Both were phenomenal. My jaw was on the floor for most of Strangers. What a story.

I still can't even believe Three Identical Strangers is real. That's some truly Orwellian shit.

When I saw this in theaters with the GF we couldn't decide if this was a good movie or a good bad movie. We enjoyed it either way.

I think some people are taking it too serious. It’s a dark comedy, not a thriller.

In that light, I thought it was well executed.

    Game Night (2017)

fun comedy, I don't watch a lot of newer comedies but I enjoyed this

    I, Tonya (2017)

I really liked this one, interesting look at a controversial story, Margot Robbie and Allison Janney were both terrific

I’m in the mood for a documentary, but I am overwhelmed by the choices I have available to me on Netflix. This is what I get for neglecting this area far too much. If anyone wants to throw out suggestions, go for it. Even a lot of the heavy hitters, I haven’t seen, so don’t feel the need to only list hidden gems.

As a Kubrick fanboy, I found Filmworker to be pretty superb. Even if I weren’t though, the sentiment behind it likely would’ve moved me.

    The Grinch (2018)

Fun little movie that creates it's own story while sticking to the theme of the original. I still think that Disney/Pixar animation is far ahead of DreamWorks in terms of quality when it comes to film.

Sums up my thoughts - I thought it was a flick that never took itself too seriously, so I took it at face value and enjoyed the hell out of it.

Those of you who rate movies using stars or numbers.... what was the last 5/5 or 4/4 or 10/10 you gave out. I recall giving 'This is England' 5/5 but I don't know what since. Even movies I would classify as my favorites of the last 10 years like Blade Runner, The Social Network, Up In The Air I don't recall giving 5 stars.

Out of 132 movies I've seen for the first time in 2018, I've given out four 5 star ratings on Letterboxd: Roman Holiday, First Man, Won't You Be My Neighbor?, and You Were Never Really Here.

But that doesn't mean I consider any of them to be perfect. The larger the scale, the less likely I am to dole out "perfect" scores. Hell, out of 2600 entries on Criticker, I've only given out eight 100/100 scores.

Good question. Similar to what Clay was saying, I will have more lax or strict standards depending on the scale I am using. If you still have the mail plan with Netflix, you can still use the 5-star scale instead of the thumbs-up/thumbs-down (which I fucking hate the latter). Anything I’d give a 9/10 or higher, would get 5 stars on Netflix. But it’s very difficult to get a 10 from me on the first viewing. I think Body Heat might have been the last one, which was probably close to three years ago now.

I've given 3/239 for 2018 per letterboxd I'm definitely too stingy about it

I'm a little surprised here, honestly. Usually if a property has had this long and arduous of a development history, I've at least heard something about it over the years. This was all new to me.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fo3yRLLrXQA

the trailer for TRIPLE FRONTIER, directed by JC Chandor. It's this small group of ex-black ops guys who plan a heist from a South American cartel so they can finally have some real money for themselves. Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal.
    it's on Netflix in March

I Feel Pretty...not a great movie, not even a good movie...

Trainwreck was quite good (especially Hader and LeBron), but this movie falls well short of that.

Yeah like if I needed to help an algorithm to suggest recommendations, I would have a lot more 5s. (Back when I had the DVD Netflix plan, for example) But in general, yeah, talking about what I would consider a "perfect" movie, I have few 5s in recent memory.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

    Tokyo Drifter- Seijun Suzuki, 1966
A Touch of Zen- King Hu, 1975
    Paris, Texas- Wim Wenders, 1984
Wings of Desire- Wim Wenders, 1987 (one of Dave's favorite movies )
    Cronos- Guillermo del Toro, 1993

Got to watch these before Filmstruck went under and loved them all.

I remember first getting Netflix and for those first few years or so, 10s would come along fairly regularly as I was knocking out so many of the heavy hitter classics, BP winners, etc. Eventually that well starts to run a little dry - the more you watch, the harder is to come by a new all-time favorite. And often, a lot of those 10s I gave out in those first few years wouldn’t be 10s now.

It’s a double-edged sword. I wish I could enjoy a truly amazing film for the first time on a regular basis. On the other hand, the rare time that it does come along, makes the experience all the more special. I feel like I even remember Clay saying this at some point way back in time, and obviously I couldn’t agree more if I remember that correctly.
