think these doods would play a corporate user conference?

You really can't predict the future like that. If Cliff wouldn't have died I think the band would have been in a much different place now. He was the conscience of the band back then, and his death was the point at which the band started to go into a different direction.

Eh, those dudes were kids then. The 20 year old version of myself would see this version as a sell out as well.

These started happening tonight. I was, regrettably, not in attendance. And won't be unless things take a big turn in my favor.

They opened with The Call of Ktulu. James also introduced Ray Burton (Cliff Burtons dad) for a tribute to Cliff. Metallica also played the full version of No Remorse and The Shortest Straw. Metallica also played Leper Messiah, The Day That Never Comes and Carpe Diem Baby. Metallica also played a song that didn't quite make Death Magnetic. The song was called Hate Train. Metallica also played an acoustic cover of Please Don't Judas Me then brought a fan on stage to play Roam. John Marshall came on stage to play Sad. All these updates are from Facebook. Sadly, I was not in attendance.

Sounds like it was awesome. I don't love them as much as I used to, but I wouldn't mind going to one of these.

All Shook Down's pictures make it look like they've transformed The Fillmore into a Metallica paradise: http://blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdown/...its_30th_a.php

Do you think when/if DMB hits 30 years, they'll do anything this bad ass?

Reunited Mercyful Fate. Geezer Butler. Ozzy Osbourne. Jerry Cantrell. Every living former member of the group. New songs. Songs that haven't been played in years. Songs that've never been played live.

    I seriously fuckin' doubt it.

No way. Dave hates his fans. I'm pretty positive on that. Metallica, for all the crap they get, are great to their diehard fans.

I dunno if it was just for Metallica or a more permanent thing, but, still. Pretty bad ass.

I'm not even mentioning everyone, either. Lou Reed. Kid Rock. Scott Ian. John Bush. Marianne Faithfull. Danzig. Rob Halford.

Edit: OK. We can leave out Lou Reed.

No way DMB does this. They would charge a mint and play half of BW every night.

^ That's the other thing that makes this incredible. These shows were exclusively for their fan club members. Tickets were $6. Six. Fucking. Dollars.

The last time I saw Metallica was at Bonnaroo a few years ago, and they did a surprise gig at a local club in Nashville either the night before or a few nights before. DMB would never do this either.

    Not a chance.

Remember when everyone thought it meant something significant that they advertised the Caravan gigs as being for the band's 20th anniversary?

    ^ I'm guessing they're planning something.

I say that only because they do the Pearl Jam thing where every show is available for sale on the band's site the next day ... but these aren't.

I think I'm the only person in the world that loves Load, so I really wanna hear some of these songs played live. Even Kirk hated the direction they were going. Starting shows off with bass solos like Orion and Ktulu is just plain filthy. I'm so jealous of those who got to go.

edit: i'm in love with these sets.

I don't hate Load, but I have to remember that Load & Reload are not the same Metallica that I first fell in love with. When I make that distinction, I think Bleeding Me, Poor Twisted Me, and The Outlaw Torn are all fucking amazing songs.

But I don't care what type of music I like, Mamma Said is fucking terrible, and embarrassing. Low Man's Lyric, however, is pretty solid.

I used to really love Load. I thought that it took brass balls to defy even the band's own name and do something that wasn't entirely metal.

But the bottom line is that while their experimentation deserves some respek, there just aren't many good songs from the band's late '90s period. You could probably mash Load and Reload together and came up with one half-good album.

I think Load & Reload could be mashed to make a pretty fucking good hard rock album. I still think Devil's Dance is a fucking killer track. Too much filler on both though (Bad Seed, Ronnie, etc...) that I think needs to go, stat.

The problem was instead of doing a double disc, they released them independently. I still consider ReLoad almost like B-sides of load, although Devil's Dance was always one that could have been on Load. If not doing a double disc, they should have released them simultaneously like GNR did with the Use Your Illusions.
