Ants Podcast: Episode 41 Discussion

In honor of the longest song the band has ever played live, we figured we would record the longest podcast we've ever recorded! OK not really; we hoped to narrow it down to 41 minutes. Fat chance, that. Anyway, join us as we review the latest shows, take your questions, and even get a live call in from our very own B-rad who was in the pit during the set break!

Listened to it this morning-good stuff. Loved the discussion about why you are a fan of the band-is it the music, the variety of their set lists, or the chance to hear a rare song just once. Made me think about it! As for me, it's probably a little bit of each, with less emphasis on getting to hear that rare song (although that is exciting, depending on the song).

Re: Ants Podcast: Episode 41 Discussion

love the show, great that someone is doing this 'weekly,' normal people get tired of hearing about DMB real fast, & I love hearing the opinions of knowledgeable fans.
Here's my view of the tour this year. I think the acoustic set is a nice thing. If the band is doing anything this year for 'hardcore' fans, it's the acoustic set. It's giving fans a chance to hear some D&T and Dave solos that you typically saw once a night, being played regularly. The downside of the 2 sets (for me) is the daylight. I like my DMB in the dark! Not a deal breaker but made for a different vibe. The other issue I have is the time restraint it puts on the rest of the show. The band hasn't been able to really jam out. The tunes were all used to hearing run 20+ min are cut down this year. Several shows this year have only 1 or 2 songs played over 10 min. So it feels like they're holding back here and there to get a few more songs in each night. To make up for that, DMB has put on some incredible performances of average songs. So Right from Chicago 7.4.14 was closer quality, Grey St. Burgettstown 6.28.14 best Ive heard in years. I think if you asked every person who saw a show this year if they liked the acoustic set, most would say "no." I like it, but not every year.

    A note on Jimi Thing:
When Dave leaves it to the crowd to sing the first two verses and choruses, it's not so bad

A question of Shake me Like a Monkey:
After the traditional end of a show & a few faithful souls chant for "one more song," If the band came back out and and played Shake me, would it still suck as a closer??
(I think it closes/closed so many shows, is the fact they can play it so so fast it's an easy out where time is concern.?)

I haven't listened yet but look forward to it- the others have been very enjoyable, especially 40 (like the discussion on Riff and if only).

I am excited to see the acoustic portion and them in general... I guess like a lot of Ants, I would like to see some more/different songs in the acoustic set: Spaceman (somewha maligned as being played a lot since 09), Broken Things, etc.

By the same token, Pay For, Recently, I'll Back You Up have all been plate quite a bit. If you had asked Ants BEFORE the tour if you'd take over/under # of plays for those at like 10, I bet many people would go under. Not only have thy been played much more than 10 times (combined) they ALL might get 10 or more plays each. That is wonderful.

Played* not plate. Damn phone autocorrect.

And yes, to be the 10,000th person to suggest this- if they play Jimi in the acoustic set, not only would people probably like it more (and w/ WWBOM outro), it'd free up a spot in the full band set for another lengthier dmb classic/epic (Lie In, Two Step Ants) that has been normally an acoustic set fixture.

They played You Never Know last night, after it was discussed on this podcast. Looks like it was a tour debut? Hmmm....

Great show! Reminded me about that Hollywood Bowl show, 10/2/07. I'm really surprised this hasn't seen a release yet. Best show of 2007 easily, and a Top 10 show for the band in the post-Stand Up era. Why hasn't this been released, actually? My only guess is that with so many prominent guests (Barnes, Ziggy Marley, and even John Mayer), the royalties/permissions or whatever might be a bit of a mess. But then maybe not. All I know is I want this show as a Trax!

I forget if it was Matt or Joe who said it, but I think it would be HILARIOUS for DMB to drop Let You Down in the acoustic set on the final show of the tour. Played just once, forever upping that show's rarity factor among hardcores.

Matt, completely disagree with you about the rare songs. I go to a show to hear good songs. I don't give a fuck if they're rare or not. Songs like The Stone, Pig, Spoon, Typical, Dreaming Tree, BOWA, DIDO, YNK etc are songs that should be played all the damn time. I could care less if I see the only performance of a song for a year. Sure, it's cool and all, but a collection of great songs makes a great show. That's why I pay $100 to go see these guys play live, not to hear one rare song and poke fun at the rest of this site for not being there.

I hate that DMB pulls out these songs and plays them a time or two and then they vanish for the rest of the year. I think it's bullshit, and is unfortunate that they get shoved back to the shelf in favor of songs like Shake Me, You and Me, Can't Stop etc.

I wonder if Joe was near me at Northerly Island. I was one of the few getting a kick out of Can't Stop.

Just got done with the listen. Another great episode guys!

I too, am very impressed with the You Never Know talk and then it happening the next night. More predictions = more tour debuts!

Also, I will be interested to hear #42 and the discussion of the Jacksonville stream, as there was some discussion this time on what direction the setlist would take. It was what I expected.

Thanks again for everything you guys do!
