What year did DDTW get really loud?

I don't know how I've gone this long without hearing a slower, earlier DDTW, but I just heard one....when the hell did they speed it up and crank the volume? I like both ways, but I really don't wanna start and stop 50 different DDTW's to find when it happened. So when did it happen? And if you feel like it, why did it happen?

Yeah, the issue for me is speed (need a title update, mod). I'm not sure when it happened, but it had to before I started going to shows in 2010. Listening to studio BTCS, I really wish they would play it live this way. I think they speed it up because they're in front of a juiced crowd and perceive that said juiced crowd wants a fast rock song and not some slow jazzy/rock song. I'll take the slow jazzy rock song all day and all night.

I think it was 2006. I love it the way it is now but I also love the album version as is, one of my fav studio cuts for sure.

The Central Park version is one of my favorites. I feel like that was kind of where it really started get louder, but it got to a different (almost unbearable) level when Tim and his distortion took over.

Yeah, it was definitely a gradual change...

It started getting louder & faster around 2001/2002-ish? The tempo slowly creeped up every tour after that.

2008 was the breaking point. Once Tim plugged in and joined the band on the road, DDTW was a total rockshow--been that way pretty much ever since.

When leroi took the reverb effect off his tenor. Sometime in 2002.

I hate the way they play it now. It sounds like shit. Tim and his annoying ass sounds just kill the song. Central Park is perfection.

I dunno, I kinda like Tim on DDTW though I've not listened to any extremely recent versions. All I know is Live in Chicago DDTW has always been my favorite

I like them both, but do like the older slower eerier versions better. Like others said, about 2002ish is when it started slowly getting louder and faster, and 2008/2009 is when it changed over to what it has been since then... I do like that Dave brought back the falsettos on each "home" (the last couple years or so?) instead of just screaming.

I’ll never understand what happened between Tim Red Rocks ‘95 and Tim ‘08-Now. In 1999-2007 my friends and I used to talk about how awesome it would be to see Tim back on stage...since he’s been back there have been so many times that I just wish he had stuck with the acoustic shows with Dave and let the band do their thing without him. Who thought the overpowering distortion was necessary?

2002 tour is when it really grew up. Listen to 4/26/2002 (I think it’s that one or the 4/27 show) as that was when I think Carter and Butch really started to bring muscle in between verses. I think the Alpine DDTW from that year was one of my all time favs. The mic doesn’t drop in at first and it adds to the power of the beginning. Funny, I think the same thing happened in 2006 at alpine when DDTW opened the show.

I have no idea, but I hate it.

I low the slow build in the older versions of DDTW, and that plucky guitar gave it such a cool, almost folk feeling.

Same here. I think they just said, “Timmy, plug in and just let it rip...and don’t stop til carter is throwing sticks out in the crowd.”

It's so damn heavy now. Album version is perfection. Still like it, but it's so heavy.

Central Park is my fav DDTW and I always feel like they're chasing that ghost. Tim doesn't help 1 bit. I'd be a happy man if I could on an extended run of not hearing this live.

The charge of energy in the tease building up to the start of that song really sets the stage. I think its the best version available.
