Also, what's the best version out there among us fans? Is there a notorious favorite?

Listening to LT2 and LT8 in anticipation of LT43. Is LT2's Sugar Will the pinnacle of that song? It must be with Carlos Santana's shredding of it.

The version on the Stand Up companion disc is pretty good too. I listen to that one most often.

I know I'm not the first or the last to ask this, but what does everyone around here think of Phish? I stumbled upon their website and noticed many comparisons with DMB as far as live releases and such. (They seem to include sounchecks and numerous other things that DMB doesn't).

Are they worth trying to get into? Nobody will ever top DMB for me but looking for something new.

There's a nice group on here who loves them. I think they're definitely worth getting into if you want to. They're a very talented group of 4, and their shows are like no other. They have their own thread on here.

I started finally listening to them in the last year or so. I'm probably whatever their version of "Big Whiskey Kids" is, as I enjoy the most recent version of Phish as opposed to their older sound, but they're phenomenal either way. If you hope for them to be similar to DMB musically, you'll be disappointed, they are a true jam band and oftentimes lyrics seem to take a back seat to the music itself. Check out some of their recent "Baker's Dozen" shows at MSG, I have them all in MP3 and they're pretty fantastic.

Give me that Roi solo on the Stand Up Companion over Carlos. Both are really good.

If you were at a local, small, intimate coffee shop type place and see a solo acoustic guitar player / vocalist cover a DMB song what would you be most excited to hear?

Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need its own thread

Been listening to some older DMB and while I still appreciate them now, they really had something magical back in the day. Really took me back. I was listening to a heartbeat intro yesterday and the way Roi played was untouchable. I thought about how if they played the heartbeat intro now and Roi were alive Rashawn would be playing on every off note he played and probably all all over him as well. It just reminded me of the dynamics and the space they used to create for each other to shine in their own way. Comparing the present to the past it sounds like a wall of sound. #34 from Live 25 reminded me of how beautifully Boyd and Roi played off each other. The sound those two created was equally untouchable. It's no wonder Boyd has fallen off the map. He probably flat out doesn't care anymore. Rashawn and Jeff play off and all over each other now, so Boyd is just kind of on his own. Whereas Boyd and Roi used to be the dynamic. Just some great music.

It's pointless, but it got me to thinking about what it would have been like for DMB had they not drifted off to such obscure paths with Everyday and Stand Up. Can you just imagine if they just took a little break here and there and continued in the path of the Lillywhite Session songs and the 04 songs? Again, it's worthless and it's been beaten to death, but dammit what if?

Been thinking lately about the overt political lyrics of many versions of the '04 songs, and the ultimate reelection of W. in 2004, and how that may have led Dave to steer away from those songs when the band started in on Stand Up.

I agree that 04 had some overt political lyrics but I don't think W being reelected stopped Dave. He may not have went with some of those road tested songs but He made even more overt political lyrics on Stand Up.

I always thought of Stand Up as a pretty political album...American Baby Intro, American Baby, Everybody Wake Up, Out of My Hands, You Might Die Trying.
