Community (New TV Show)

I've been doing a full rewatch of the show and S5 is nowhere near as bad as I remember it. The first half or the episodes up to MeowMeowBeenz are on level with some of the lesser S3 episodes. Ass Crack Bandit was a huge standout. The lava world with Troy was even better than I remember it.

I've noticed a lot of S4 & S5 are better during a binge watch. They flow with the other episodes differently than watched standalone.

Liked how the dealt with the head of IT in the newest episode, who if you forgot was played by Paget Brewster last season.

31 minute run-time. Nice.
Really enjoyed how for such a ridiculous storyline with the Dean, they kept him more grounded and not wildly insane.
Baby steps in fixing the characters. Love it.

damn, I keep completely forgetting that this thing is there to be had online pretty much I guess by the first couple hours after midnight, at the most. Though, it was taking me a bit to put my finger on what was kind of nagging me awhile about them all so far, and I got it. I realize with the new bigger budget they're now obviously taking huge advantages of outdoor shooting waaaaaaay more than they have since at least season 1-2, but even the basic studyroom, they're pretending like they're letting in the afternoon's natural light from the "outside". I mean they were plenty of times last year where it was clearly daytime when they were all at the table, but things contrasted a little more in the room cause you didn't have light being thrown in from those blinders. I'm not crazy about it, it gives it a very different visual look.

and btw in this latest episode, you kind of had to listen carefully, but right as the "prison fight" broke out in that room between Jeff and Willy's stands, you could hear the one other black inmate standing nearby saying something like "yo, kill that motherfucker now!" And another robust (28min and change) runtime. The way Harmon originally talked about this element, it seemed like it'd be maybe just a couple times, that often going longer just cause they could would potentially make it feel too much like a different show, but I think they've gone like at least 26min every time now.

There was some good stuff overall in that main Jeff story A thread, but the whole Abed/Annie/Britta thing was... meh. That was a lot of screen time invested for a predictable and kind of limp resolution.

Seems like the Dean is really getting a lot of screen time this season. Must be making up for all the other characters leaving.

It sucks that Britta has been the "new Pierce".
If he was still around, everything would be great actually.
Losing Shirley isn't that bad, and Troy was pretty overrated too.

I don't know about Troy being overrated but I agree with everything else. Britta was the worst (meta joke) but you're right she has taken the Pierce role and it doesn't best exemplify her.

She used to be such a strong character and even by Season 3 with the goofy/nerdiness they cast on her it still fit her well.

well they sort of even directly acknowledged that by season 3. Jeff straight up saying to her at one point (almost with pity) "I thought you were smarter than me when we first met", which in all fairness she was. They took the "she's the worst" and REALLY ran with it.

I don't mind Shirley being gone, she was always my least favorite of the core, somehow even less so than Pierce. Troy overrated? you cray cray

Pretty good season finale. Season was a pretty big disappointment overall. Can't tell if they'll have a S7 or movie but they definitely put a nice end on it in case they don't.

Thought the last two episodes were probably the best of the season.
Just sucks because it proves they can still produce really strong episodes if they actually tried.
So much just laziness and poor effort throughout S4-S6.

All 110 eps from all 6 seasons coming as a Blu-ray box set from Mill Creek this September - worth it with a price drop just to get the first three seasons on Blu-ray quality...can't think of any other show that has as much repeat value. So funny.

Giving this show a shot. Been through HIMYM, The Office and Parks and Rec several times. This seems like a good one to go with next.

if you liked Parks & Rec a lot, I just can't imagine there's any way you won't really dig Community as well. And put it this way: were you a big Arrested Development fan? Because the Russo Brothers (currently the revered gods of the Marvel universe) were major creative players early on for both Arrested Development and Community. They directed the pilot episode in each case and Executive Producers for the first few years.


yes season 4 was a significant drop off after the firing of creator Dan Harmon (something that's of course then much dealt with in meta fashion in later years), but he was back in charge for season 5. I mean I won't sit here and try to make an argument that seasons 5 and 6 stand in equal quality with seasons 1-3, but they're still damn great TV. Even "bad" Community is better than 90% of all other sitcoms of the last decade-plus, easy.

holy shit, seriously?? I mean, these days, hearing someone having seen both The Office and Parks & Rec, but not also AD, that's genuinely kind of shocking. I think there's a lot of fandom crossover between P&R and AD (and Community for that matter).




As far as watch order, no I wouldn't really say that matters all that much. I can't deny AD does now seem a little dated in spots, the pilot was shot in 2006. But a lot of big names in comedy, AD was some of their earlier stuff (if not very first). like Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, Will Arnett, and it was a huge sort of comeback thing for Jason Bateman. He completely credits Mitch Hurwitz (the show's creator, and incidentally cameos in s3 of Community in a hilarious guest starring role) with revitalizing his career, and everything about where Bateman's at.
Community and AD are both VERY easter egg-heavy shows, multiple repeat viewings will be extremely rewarding. I genuinely regard both in the top 10 best sitcoms list of all time. It almost even feels sort of reductive to refer to them as "sitcoms".
