I thought Venom was great - saw a 5p viewing.

I'm not following the criticism of it.

I will completely differ from the critic’s Tomatometer and side more with the Audience Score on Venom. The critics got it completely wrong. Venom was fantastic, enjoyable, and very well done. I loved Venom in the Spideyverse and Lethal Protector was a fantastic run, and I think they nailed the anti-hero role. Hardy was a joy, and the effects were very well done.

damn apparently Scarlett Johannson's scored herself a cool $15M for the solo Black Widow movie, this is just about the same that Hemsworth got for Ragnorak and Evans for Civil War.

She definitely earned it. Black Widow has been a great character in the MCU since the start.

wow. Did not expect this. Marvel/Netflix just straight up and canceled Iron Fist today. They'd hired an entirely different Showrunner (blanking on name), they shortened the otherwise standard MCU episode count from 13 to 10, they tried to make better choreographed/edited fight scenes. and that was a pretty much 0-for-3 right there.

I mean obviously Netflix cancels original programming of their own all the time, in fact one particular quote I'm sorta quasi-remembering from a couple years ago from the main Creative VP there, he said something like "I should be seeing A LOT more passes on new projects or cancellation orders for newer series, but I'm not, which means we're not thinking imaginatively or way outside the box than we should be. We're not seeing nearly as much failure as we should, meaning we need to be taking even greater chances than we already do. The greatest thing from which we have to learn is our failure."

Granted, maybe that's just rather boilerplate businessmen, cliche-ridden, "get your head in the game' speech from certain authority figures to lower rungs in the cog. I don't know. Unfortunately not very much genuinely would surprise me in my cynical world anymore, but at the same time yea I could totally see that being real.

okay first of all, I apologize, that tore like a mile's worth long tangent about some Tony Robbins bullshit... WTF junior?!?!

But anyway with Marvel even with consistantly successful shows, there are still characters on the side that peel off all the time. Iron Fist clearly wasn't going to be hanging around in perpetuity. And they're already in the midst of shooting Punisher s2, Jessica Jones s3 might even be done already, not sure. It seemed all but a lock Defenders s2 would be sitting on a backburner for a good long wil.

I knew full well they wouldn't have a sustained, long run. My best hope scenario would've been they basically dropped everything besides Daredevil, and folded him, Kingpin and all the other main relevant characters, etc, into the MCU.

Posted it in the main movie thread but I really enjoyed Venom, it was unapologetic for being a by-the-numbers superhero formula movie. The supporting characters and villain were shallow and without much to do, but the dynamic between Eddie and Venom was really cool, and I wish we got to spend more time with that "relationship" which was more interesting than any of Eddie's relationships with the other characters.

I think the reason this movie worked was because, in a day where superhero movies are pretentiously self-important, this was just a story about a guy who does cool stuff. Sometimes keeping it simple works, and it did here. Tonally it was a little odd, but it was weirdly refreshing how not-seriously it took itself. It was kind of a mix between the best parts of Deadpool (for the dark humor/gore/action) and the Hulk (dual personalities).

Was it the best movie I've ever seen? Hell no. But it was an enjoyable 1h40m and I'm happy I spent a Tuesday date night with my wife watching it. Overall I'd put it in the 7/10 range. Had me excited to see how they can expand on the Eddie/Venom relationship in a sequel.

When I was walking into the theater I saw a dad and little kid walking out and I overheard the dad say "Did that movie scare you?" and the little boy nodded. I thought surely, that dad didn't take his kid to see a scary movie. I figured it had to be Venom because I mean to a little kid Venom can probably be a little scary looking.

Walking out, I kinda understood why he asked that. I'm a massive wimp when it comes to scary stuff and there were a few jump scares and suspenseful moments that definitely gave it that "horror" feel.

Wasn't expecting that walking in but it really fit the character.

I didn't find even one second of the movie remotely scary/thrilling/jumpy, perhaps it was the sound design because his "roar" was pretty menacing.

The physicality/powers and presence of Venom was really cool. The CG was actually really on-point as well.

    Spoiler-ing just to be safe

[spoilers] There were really two scenes that made me think this:

    1) When Eddie was walking around the lab and looking at all the patients. Few times patients jumped at the window unexpectedly. Also it had a creepy horror type vibe to it with the blood and guts splattered everywhere.

    2) When the neighbor was playing his guitar and Eddie ran across the hall and Venom jumped out briefly at the guy. Wasn't expecting that and gave me a jump. [/spoilers]

I wouldn't say those bits were necessarily scary but as a little kid that shit would've frightened the hell out of me.

yeah and literally just a couple of days after the public statement of the main Netflix content guy saying (seemingly optimistically so) something like "it is entirely our own call whether or not something of ours is cancelled, and we're quite pleased with everything at the moment"

I'd imagine it would seem likely that, while there won't be another Defenders series (tho which I still apparently liked more than most), but that these characters would still appear in further Daredevil and/or JJ material.

It's crazy - when I was a kid I would drool at the thought of a Luke Cage TV show. Now? I honestly haven't even watched the second season. There's so much superhero stuff out there, it's hard to keep up. Not saying that's a bad thing, I'm just glad there's one less thing I have to worry about being behind on. I haven't even watched Punisher yet, and I was so excited about that show.

Punisher and the three seasons of Daredevil are the only ones worth watching IMO. I'm not sad about Luke Cage or Iron Fist. I wish they'd can Jessica Jones too.

That said, I'm on ep 10 of Daredevil and this season is incredible. It's giving S1 a run for it's money.
