Now that I think about it, Dave and Tim LT23 is probably my favorite Warehouse.
Have always agreed with this point. Daves voice is the most important instrument in the band imho. If daves voice is off, I find it hard to listen to that performance. There are always exceptions though

Couple side side notes-2004 is my favorite summer. But I'm a little bias. I didn't start going to shows until 98, and didn't start going to multiple locations each summer until 2003.

And one of my favorite performances of all time is dave solo at 2004 farm aid. Something about that performance has always felt like major to me. Can't believe Ive been watching it for 13 years already.

I thought it was tough to listen to the whole thing. Not because it's bad, but most DMB songs are played out for me and I'm just beginning to realize it.

I think the 04 songs sound terrible. We had the previously released versions because they are great, and I was expecting these to be of that caliber. These are just Dave mumbling until a half written chorus.

Need a DMB break for a while, I think.

Happened to me after 2006 (I went to 6 shows that summer), and has been declining somewhat ever since. I still get excited to go to shows (usually one a year.. maybe two if the stars align), and I don't listen to anything past the mid '00s live unless I've been to it or it's a freebie (warehouse disc for example) or a download of a show I've been to. Because I've scaled it back, when it comes time for something I really want, like this one was, I'm beyond stoked for it.

For me, "Sugar Will" always worked with the mumbling lyrics, mainly because that one was all about the groove and the jam at the end. I feel the same way about "Good Good Time". However, I agree that for the most part tunes without lyrics have not aged well for me. I was fine with it back then in the moment, same with 2000, but now I find it hard to listen to songs like "Joyride" or even "Crazy Easy" sometimes. "Joyride" is easier to listen to with the completed lyrics, and I actually love the rhythmical flow of the lyrics he wrote for "Crazy Easy" in 2013. A 2000 or 2001 "Grey Street" is still listenable because that one was pretty close to finished, but songs like a 2000 "Raven" are not anything I would choose to listen to. It just takes away from my enjoyment a bit, especially if it's something that ended up being completed and I can hear the words spinning around in my head as I listen. This does not mean I think the 2004 songs are terrible, but listening back it's not as enjoyable to listen to an unfinished song.

Not much to add besides I think you're pretty spot on with your assessment of those songs.

I think improvs are way cooler than set lyrics. Especially when Dave was at his peak creativity in 2000 with Raven. Some of the lyrics of Ravens are insane when he improvd them. Can you imagine now? It would just be about changing the world and loving each other.

I thought basically every 2004 Crazy Easy surpassed all the 2013 Crazy Easys. And all 2004 Sugar Wills surpassed all the 2016 Sugar Wills. That's one reason that I'm not a huge advocate for releasing all those songs now or beyond, because they aren't what they were. Dave isn't nearly as creative.

I can agree with you on the Sugar Will stance, but I actually loved the music and lyrical structure of Crazy Easy in 2013. While I could definitely take more Boyd skree's on it (since that was an integral part of the song in 2004) I really enjoyed it and wished they kept it going afterwards. Someone here put it perfectly when it came back and people we're complaining about it not being the 2004 version--"At some point, you have to finish the song"; and it appears like Dave and the boys did just that with Crazy Easy.

Loved the pacing and the delivery of the set lyrics on the Bristow 13 version. Noticed Boyd is playing his chorus part but an octave lower on the 13 versions.

It doesn't rev up so much as it hits the ground running with Too Much opener.

And then doesn't go much of anywhere. I don't hate I Did It but it's no classic and it feels particularly lifeless following an 04 Too Much. Hello Again is great but then you slide into Everyday. I was really into that song in the summer of 04, it was one of the tunes that really defined that year, but this is kind of a strange spot for it. It doesn't do much for me. This Captain is not a good version. Sugar Wull has on;y ever been OK to me, at best. Warehouse is nice and then oof WTWE. It's pretty strong after that but there's just a lot of starting and stopping momentum in the first half of the show.

For me. I'm happy for those who love this one. And I'm certainly happy to have any 04 show released just to get more versions of songs from that summer.

It's a good show, but I agree that something doesn't quite hit the mark when I listen to it as a full set. I haven't been able to put my finger on it, but maybe it's the song placement, or just the versions of the songs themselves. I also agree that Captain is average at best on this release. The opening of the song is kind of a mess getting going. It's still great to hear DMB of that era, and of course Roi, but just because it comes from 04 doesn't make it perfect. I made mention of not being overly impressed and got caught some flack for it as well because God help you if you say anything bad about DMB pre-2005.

I certainly prefer the sound of the band form this era, but as an overall show it's good, but not great. Bad voice or not, I'm more stoked for the Gorge release because of the set, the blu-ray and it was my first Gorge experience.

I have played this in the car before but I really noticed the mix is on the very low end of the live trax's I have. It's disappointing because it's a good show. Yeah I'm playing it through factory car speakers, but other live trax's sound way better in my car then this one.

I've thought this as well. Dave's voice sounds very distant and for some reason it sounds empty at times. The first few live trax always sounded better to me. If Dave's voice isn't crisp in the mix then it bothers me.
