This whole conversation occurred mere days before the performance. I did not blatantly ask him if he would be touring next year. I get the sense when talking to butch that he gets tired of people always asking about DMB and I was trying to be respectful and let him lead the conversation.

None of this is surprising to me. I really do not believe he'll be making any kind of comeback. From the sounds of it his parting wasn't on great terms, and they really don't need 8 people on stage. It's cluttered sounding enough. And if for some reason he came back and people think he's going to bring back a sound that existed 10 years ago you're crazy. The days of dynamic playing have long since passed. The band you have seen and heard on stage since Roi died is the band that is staying. Rashawn is going nowhere, Butch isn't coming back, Tim will always be loud, Boyd is forever lost gallivanting the woods of Narnia with Mr. Tumnus, Carter is a hard rock drummer now, and Jeff will always play like Jeff.....rant over.
If he doesn't come back then he got a really raw deal for a guest spot. He was almost completely unseen the whole show (I think I caught a glimpse of him once) and Dave didn't do much in the way of welcoming him back to the stage. He mentioned him when he ran through the band, but after a 10 year absence I expected at least something along the lines of "Hey all, it's been a long time, but we want to welcome an old friend of ours, Butch Taylor, to the stage. He lives in town and was able to join us for the evening, so thanks to him for joining us this evening". Instead he just dropped his name real quick as if it was totally normal. Thought the whole thing seemed kind of weird.
