Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think they sounded great or anything, I just felt all things considered they sounded pretty alright

Rashawn started playing with them full time in 2006, and actually sat in on a bunch of 2005 shows if I remember correctly.

Just didn't realize the bar was that low. I've seen this band do some amazing things. That was not even close to being one of them.

Tim needs to go away. Totally ruined DDTW. He's constantly stepping on everyone's toes rather than complimenting the music. Please...no more. Gimme Butch back.

I was in and out of the webcast (especially during DMB's train wreck) but I can't say I saw Bruce a single time. I was waiting patiently to see him but I must have missed it. Even when they zoomed out on the band, he appeared to be cut out of the frame.

I spoke with Butch on 10/1 at Blenheim Vineyards and even he was shocked that he did not get 1 second of airtime during the show. Also, from my impression, this was a one off thing and seemed unlikely that he'll be returning full time, which is unfortunate.

Even if Butch did return (I would love for that sound to be back), then it wouldn't matter because as long as Tim and his electric guitar is there, it'll mute him like he has done to Boyd and Dave

Basically butch guesting was his idea... when the concert was first announced, butch called up dave and asked if there was anyway he could help. Dave responded, "you mean by playing?", and proceeded to say that it might be tough considering the lack of rehearsal time. Dave proceeded to tell butch he would run it by the band to see how they felt.. Butch said that Carter and Fonz were particularly fond of the idea of him guesting. This whole conversation occurred mere days before the performance. I did not blatantly ask him if he would be touring next year. I get the sense when talking to butch that he gets tired of people always asking about DMB and I was trying to be respectful and let him lead the conversation.

None of this is surprising to me. I really do not believe he'll be making any kind of comeback. From the sounds of it his parting wasn't on great terms, and they really don't need 8 people on stage. It's cluttered sounding enough. And if for some reason he came back and people think he's going to bring back a sound that existed 10 years ago you're crazy. The days of dynamic playing have long since passed. The band you have seen and heard on stage since Roi died is the band that is staying. Rashawn is going nowhere, Butch isn't coming back, Tim will always be loud, Boyd is forever lost gallivanting the woods of Narnia with Mr. Tumnus, Carter is a hard rock drummer now, and Jeff will always play like Jeff.....rant over.

If he doesn't come back then he got a really raw deal for a guest spot. He was almost completely unseen the whole show (I think I caught a glimpse of him once) and Dave didn't do much in the way of welcoming him back to the stage. He mentioned him when he ran through the band, but after a 10 year absence I expected at least something along the lines of "Hey all, it's been a long time, but we want to welcome an old friend of ours, Butch Taylor, to the stage. He lives in town and was able to join us for the evening, so thanks to him for joining us this evening". Instead he just dropped his name real quick as if it was totally normal. Thought the whole thing seemed kind of weird.

Well it did, no reason to make that up. Here's a pic of me and my 5 year old chatting with him. Butch played at Blenheim vineyards on 10/1/17 with the Robert Jospe' Express.

Tim's playing has absolutely nothing to do with Boyd's inaudibility. Boyd is muted at the soundboard.

I agree with lots of your post. One item (that merits another thread, I suppose) is the change in Carter over the years. Your description of current-day Carter feels really accurate. And, I miss the old Carter! Too much over-the-top playing the last number of years ...

Sad, but it speaks volumes about the state of the band that we are upset by Butch not returning. Most of us want a return to the jazz era of DMB and it is just not coming anytime soon.

This is true. He plays often around the area, produces at a studio out in Scottsville. Have played and hung with him a couple times.

Or ever. They will NEVER return to that sound. DMB has proven time and time again that they don't spend much time dwelling on the past. Their sound has always grown and changed through the years, but it's never gone backwards.
