Re: 2012: The Year of BOYD.

He needs to go back to regular acoustic violins, his new electric sounds better and its prob easy to play (which doesn't seem to prevent the skreeeeeet) but it still doesn't sound as good as real violins do. I don't get how he can get progressively worse every year, too stoned maybe? Not into it? Lillywhite will at least be him back from a recording standpoint after his disappearance from Big Whiskey.

    that's the crucial aspect.
Lillywhite's not gonna tolerate a silent Boyd. Lillywhite has a reputation of Pushing who he's producing. and that's what Boyd needs. He needs to be reminded that he's a founding member of this band and to play like it. Really hoping Lillywhite can tame Tim too. I love Tim and what he brings (especially live) but i don't want him interfering with Boyd. I want the two of them to Hold down their side (Stage right) and kill it. them dueling would be awesome.

it's not going to be easy to take 7 talented musicians, 3 of which are virtuosos at their craft and give everyone their own presence and voice on an album. However lillywhite has that skill and i'm confident he will push everyone to their max. the difference between 1998 and now is that the band was immature in 1998. Now they are having a great time, and are motivated on a more mature level to produce really good music. Boyd and Dave are definitely the two weakpoints right now so they need to step their game up.

and wow my last post had some serious grammatical challenges to it

I said this in another thread, but it probably fits better here...

I think LeRoi's death really effected him. They used to play to each other on stage constantly. Jeff doesn't communicate instrumentally with Boyd like Roi did. You can hear it in a lot of songs, such as Satellite or Seek Up live in certain parts. And during jams, the two of them never really play off of each other, it's always Jeff and Rashawn battling.

Agreed. Boyd, please take back what's yours and turn down any knob you can find that's wired to Tim, thank you. Was happy to get a solid Nancies out of Boyd in Sept 2010 but he's just been hangin out in the dark far too much lately.

As for the acoustic, I'd never really paid much attention to it until I spent some time with the Wetlands '93 release: possibly my all-time favorite version of Ants and largley bc of what Broyd had going on with that violin, great "real/wood" tone instead of the electric sound.

    It's also song selection...

Boyd gets going when Billies, LIOG, Ants etc are played...but his talents were left out on BW...and when BW songs are featured heavily...less Boyd.

Hopefully, if there's a new album by the tour or sometime later this year, BT is involved more. Because for me anyway...it's Boyd that got me hooked to this band...bc it was a different sound to me in the late 90's...

out of curiosity, which 3 are the virtuosos? Hope this doesn't come off negative/aggressive as I'm just really fucking tired and don't know how else to say it. I could see an argument being made for really anybody in the band except Fonz being a virtuoso. Boyd, Carter, Jeff, Rashawn, Dave, Tim are all true masters of their craft or pioneers in their field.

I just don't see fonz as one. don't get me wrong, I love his sounds, he's my favorite band member. I just see Tim/Dave/Carter/Boyd/Jeff/Rashawn as more musically oriented. Fonz still rocks though.

Stefan is a pretty exceptional bassist in my not so expert opinion. He plays consistently well with one of the more unique/great drummers in any popular band.

And I think he's far better at his instrument than BT.

Hopefully Boyd isn't indifferent and consistently lost up there again. I don't think I've ever seen a musician who's seemingly regressed so much at playing their instrument.

yeah, i guess I recognize this as true but for some reason I never really thought of Fonz as a musical virtuoso. Although that "Shipwrecked" song was pretty damn awesome. Sidenote, does anybody know where I can find that? I searched a month ago and I couldn't find it.

Stefan is definitely a solid bassist (though not a virtuoso), it's not easy to keep up with Carter. Does anyone know if he's still taking music theory classes?

Stefan is a very solid bass. He's not spectacular, but he does his job perfectly for what the band is trying to accomplish. He also has great chemistry with Carter which is very important.
