Same, listened TONNES when it first came out - last two years I don't think I've even listened to a single track from it, let alone whole way through

Unfortunate that it didn't hold up. I enjoyed it during the first few weeks and still return to Snow Outside often.

None of the other songs translated into their show, (except maybe Rooftop) and I think that's where the hang up is. Feels like an empty, strange album without those live connections

I actually listen to it quite a bit. Its a good album to put on and just let it play. Its not great live, at all. Its the reverse version of Stand Up.

Broken Things and Snow Outside are both fantastic and still get a lot of play for me.

I like a few other songs, the rest is meh. I hate Gaucho.

Still love this record for what it is. Broken Things, BBN, Sweet, The Riff, If Only, and Drunken Soldier are still favorites of mine. I like Snow Outside, but I have to be in the right mood to listen to it.

Gaucho would actually be one of my favorites, if not for some of the lyrical content. Still one of my favorites musically.

Great listening album....but besides Snow Outside and Rooftop, does nothing for me live.

Broken Things was my favorite off the album though.

Re: Away From The World turns 5 today

Which albums did they play live first before recording, and which did they release studio and only then play live? My initial guess would be:
    UTTAD - live first
    Crash - live first
BTCS - studio first mostly, a few live
    ED - studio first
    BS - half half
    SU - studio first
    BWGGK - studio first
    AFTW - studio first

Is that accurate? Does it potentially show the way they develop songs is almost directly related to the quality of the albums' songs?

I was thinking about the 5-year mark just the other day. I know some would rather they just tour and play the classics and aren't concerned about new releases. On the other hand, I find myself losing interest a bit. Not really enthused about investing a lot of time/energy/money in a greatest-hits band.

boring album that produced a couple gems (snow outside & broken things).. literally could never hear any of the rest of the album again and would be totally fine with it.

While harshly worded, I have to agree.

When it first came out, I thought I would grow into loving the album. Instead, I find that I have my few tunes I listen to from it, but overall, I like BW much better.

This sums it up basically. I think it's because of two reasons: 1) Dave for some reason insists on writing songs he can't pull off vocally, 2) The way they play nowadays has the dynamic range of a Sia album mix.

Agreed, that said, I haven't listened to either is ages. Would still take AFTW 10/10 times over BW.

AFTW has higher highs for me with Broken Things, Snow Outside, BBN solo (such a disappointment live without it) but overall I'm more likely to listen to BW studio album. Love how tunes like LITHOG, #27, and Beach Ball sounded with Cavallo behind the board.

Chad do you have a similar thing but for when the albums were recorded? Did they play most songs in the studio before actually recording (rather than before the date of album release)? How much time passed between the recording and release dates??

These are studio sessions dates. These are the dates listed here on AntsMarching in Tour Central. I’m assuming the ones that say January 1st are just a guess and the year is correct but the date may be unknown.

UTTAD Sessions began May 16th, 1994 in Woodstock, NY.

Crash Sessions began September 1st, 1995 in Bearsville, NY.

BTCS Sessions began February 1st, 1998 in Sausalito, CA.

The Lillywhite Sessions began February 1st, 2000 in Charlottesville, VA

Busted Stuff Sessions began January 1st, 2002 (estimate) in Sausalito, CA.

The Some Devil Sessions began November 1st, 2002 in Seattle, WA.

The 2004 Sessions began April 1st, 2004 in Charlottesville, VA.

The Stand Up Sessions began January 1st, 2005 (estimate) in Charlottesville, VA.

The 2007 Mark Batson Sessions began January 1st, 2007 (estimate) in Charlottesville, VA.

The Big Whiskey Sessions began January 1st, 2009 (estimate) in New Orleans, LA.

The Away From The World Sessions began January 1st, 2012 (estimate) in Seattle, WA.

The Jakob Dylan/Dave Matthews Sessions took place in Shreveport, LA between 2013 and 2014.

I love love love this album. It is part of my annual rotation, so it gets played heavily for a few months of each year.
