markbatsonrocks @brenny5 I have a lot of favorites. It’s just classic song after classic song. I played some songs last night and people were hugging and crying.

It’s really amazing to see someone have such a creative spark after doing their craft for many years. You will see for yourself. Carter sounds down right

markbatsonrocks@deadheadbarry it has bits of a lot of albums. The band is digging deep and they have what I feel is one of their best performances on record. BTCS is one of my favorite albums though. I can’t compare anything to that. Lol. But this album is breaking new ground and discovering new territory. We scratched the surface on Stand Up but Carter’s drums and David’s songwriting go to another level on this one. I’m beyond impressed. I heard a song called That Girl Is You that is a freaking amazing performance. I asked them to play it for me 4 times in a row.

dacam07 Mark one more question. What’s the percentage or number of songs on this album (or recorded ) that’s been played live already? Meaning is the album mostly road tested songs or brand new

markbatsonrocks @crotesmcgotes never did that. Carter always made the drums or drum loops and programming. On this one though, all live drums beating the passion of life. Extraordinary.

Can't believe the amount of people who think BW>AFTW.

AFTW has so many classic DMB roots. Dave's chords are the classic "Dave chords" (Broken Things, Mercy). The tempos and time signatures are reminiscent of old DMB (see: Mercy, The Riff, Snow Outside). Unique musical combinations and placements. Nothing will ever touch the big 3, but AFTW, to me, reminded us that they were the same band.

The only downer for me on AFTW is Rooftop.

BW just sucks overall. Beach Ball's my favorite song off it and it didn't even make the original album.

If I had to choose from the 2006 songs on the album I would choose break free or shotgun. If 2004 songs are included as well I would choose crazy easy

I will go with BW as the better album and here's why

It's just an easier album to listen to then AFTW as a whole. It's more the flow of the album as a whole that I like better. That doesn't mean it has better songs tho. I like that AFTW goes back to the roots but something about the album bores me and I can't get all the way through the album without skipping around. That's not the case with BW for me.

BW on the other hand doesn't traslate well live to me. But the AFTW stuff is better live then the studio.

The news is interesting. I’d almost rather have mostly older songs at this point. A mix of producers and some Roi and Butch appearances is pretty intriguing.

I think predicting the quality of an album based off of the (alleged) title is kind of silly.

BW > AFTW. AFTW isn’t their worst album, but it is their most forgettable. BW is just a much better listen.

I agree. Same with Belly Belly Nice. There’s something about those recordings...they’re so flat sounding compared to the live renditions and I can’t pinpoint why.

I'd have to give my vote to BW. I find it to be the album that I go back to the more often. Also could argue LITHOG is better than any song on AFTW.

LITHOG, Squirm, Baby Blue, Why I Am, Samurai Cop, Bismarck, and Black and Blue Bird are better than anything off AFTW.

I would even argue that songs like Time Bomb, Alligator Pie, and Spaceman are better than Snow Outside, The Riff, Drunken Soldier, etc.

Even the best songs on AFTW feel exhausting. I just re-listened to Broken Things, The Riff, and Snow Outside, and they feel so tired. Like they feel bored with themselves. I don't know how to put this in concrete terms. Everyone puts importance on Lillywhite, but he IMO is by all mean a good producer, not great. Some of his stuff with U2 is blah. Maybe the point I'm making is that the producer is not the end all. I think a good artistic process is when the creator is having fun, being playful, and doesn't consider the music to be work. (Obviously I don't know anything about Dave's writing process during AFTW).

Immediately after I listened to those songs on AFTW I turned on Alligator Pie and it was fun, dynamic, not tired, not exhausting, and then it ended and went straight into Seven and I was immediately drawn. I hate Seven! But I was into it.

Dave is best when he is his fully ridiculous, playful self. I think 3 producers is interesting, maybe he'll have fun with it.

Dave in my mind is a child. Kid needs his play time!

This I'll give you--because LITHOG is freaking incredible. But.

AFTW has the better audio mix. Lillywhite's a god when it comes to putting the parts of that band together, he knows how to make them sound like themselves. If his production style had been used on BW I would give my vote to BW in this race.

But when we almost got them in 2009, it would’ve been Cavallo producing them and not Batson.
